Learning directly from recordings, or transcribing, is a gratifying and important skill for any musician. And while there are no short-cuts to this process (developing one's ear to the point where you can do this does require practice and attention) some newer audio software programs have made it significantly more user-friendly.
Using examples from my own recent transcribing history (mostly Irish and American fiddle tunes) - as well as a tune or two that I've never played before - this workshop will give you a practical taste of the transcribing process and hopefully jump-start your own learning to learn by ear.
ORRIN STARR is an award-winning guitarist who combines hot picking, cool singing and good humor. Once described as "Arlo Guthrie-meets-Doc Watson," he was the 1976 National Flatpicking Champion, has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, and boasts a repertoire that ranges from from bluegrass standards to little-known folk gems, Celtic fiddle tunes to fingerstyle blues. orrinstar.com
