Welcome to the Acoustic Guitar Community.

I have a small 50 watt PA (Kustom PA50) that I'm running a passive sound hole pickup and mic into. But, I want to boost the output a bit. Rather than a separate preamp for each item, I thought a mixer (with preamps) might work better. Can I then run one of the channels of the balanced stereo outputs thru a 1/4 cord to the PA? And if I want to run it into the house PA at a live gig which has XLR input, do I use a passive DI box from the mixer to the house PA? If a mixer is the solution, any suggestions for a mixer under $100?

It could work.  I'd try to borrow a mixer to try it.  The trouble you may run into is that the mixer may give your PA a signal that's too hot for its preamp and overdrive it.  If you have a gig with a house PA you probably wouldn't need it.
