Acoustic Guitar Community

Welcome to the Acoustic Guitar Community.

Hi everybody,

Just wondering - who are your favorite female guitarists? Could be any genre or era... famous or not so much...

It's fun for me to hear about my fellow ladies and to learn about new artists or ones I've never been exposed to - and they make great stories to inspire my students with.

(I'll add my own contributions when I have a few more minutes to spare.)

[ADDITIONAL REQUEST - ALONG WITH NAMES, PLEASE INCLUDE THE GENRE, LINKS, TIMEFRAME, LOCATION, ANY OTHER QUICK BIO INFO THAT YOU HAVE. Thanks all! I will compile this into a list - thanks for the suggestion, Jeff.]

Bonnie Raitt, Rory Block, Susan Tedeschi (although I like Tedeschi mostly for those vocals).
I've seen Bonnie Raitt live a bunch of times.

I dig Mimi Fox, Emily Remler, Sharon Isbin, and Bonnie Raitt. Gosh, that's all I can think of right now.

How about Vicki Genfan, Lily Afshar, Del Ray, Ana Vidovic, Muriel Anderson, Alison Brown, Mollie Tuttle, Kaki King, Patty Larkin, Alex Houghton, and Rory Block for starters? All great players. Several of them are included in the La Guitarra project, which is well worth checking out. And yes, I definitely second all the others mentioned.

I love Bonnie Raitt, but the most jaw-dropping woman guitarist of them all has to be Gabriela (don't know last name) of the duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. Do a YouTube search if you haven't seen her.

Not really known for her guitar playing, but I really do enjoy Iris DeMent. She sure does a fine job moving across the fretboard on "Let the Mystery Be." I got to see Ana Vidovic last August, and she was great as well. Lastly, there's Claudia Schmidt, a regional artist in Michigan, who has real stage presence as well as a damned fine player.

I'm sure there are others who I'm not familiar with

Don't forget Madeleine Peyroux. Many people don't realize it, but she is a fine jazz guitarist and does her own playing on her recordings.

This one was done by my very first instructor, who ran off to spain to teach classical guitar, here is a bit of her music I hope you enjoy it, if not for her 40 + years ago I would never had played guitar and to think I got to thank her for what she has given me, I wonder how may of us can thank the one who got us started, enjoy.

I'm mostly self taught .. I only took guitar lessons for a about a 2 years while i was in high school.
i had a wonderful guitar teacher .. Phillip "Flip" Shoemaker , Kansas University Graduate and Noted Jazz recording artist.
I remember the first day i went to a lesson with him i said " can you teach me "this" song" he replied "I'll do better than that, I'll teach you to TEACH YOURSELF ANY SONG you want to learn"
A few years ago i did a google search and found him mentioned in a venue in VA at a Ramada or something.
I called the Hotel and got the keyboard players contact info and got in touch with him ..
I sent him one of the cool guitar lamps that appear in many of my video's signed with a note
To the Greatest Guitar Teacher EVER ..
was pretty cool talking to him after so many years ..
