Acoustic Guitar Community

Welcome to the Acoustic Guitar Community.

Hi everybody,

Just wondering - who are your favorite female guitarists? Could be any genre or era... famous or not so much...

It's fun for me to hear about my fellow ladies and to learn about new artists or ones I've never been exposed to - and they make great stories to inspire my students with.

(I'll add my own contributions when I have a few more minutes to spare.)

[ADDITIONAL REQUEST - ALONG WITH NAMES, PLEASE INCLUDE THE GENRE, LINKS, TIMEFRAME, LOCATION, ANY OTHER QUICK BIO INFO THAT YOU HAVE. Thanks all! I will compile this into a list - thanks for the suggestion, Jeff.]

Thanks, Micah! This is great! I was actually in Wikipedia and saw lists of guitarists, but didn't see this one.

This will keep me busy for as long as the current cold spell lasts... won't have to worry about finding other things to surf the internet for until spring comes. :D

Woo hoo! I just had a conversation with one of my 7 year old students - Emma, who wants to be a professional guitarist! :) Now we have loads of people to talk about.

Mary Flower is an amazingly fine guitarist. Unlike most of the others mentioned here, she is first and foremost a guitarist, though she also has a nice voice.

Hi Leanne, thats an easy one.......and the oscar goes to........Vicki Genfan, she has so much groove and funkiness in her playing even her softer material has soul, let me add Patty Larkin to that list too and Rory Block for her authentic blues playing.I met Mary Flower at a guitar camp and her playing was fantastic,a sort of ragtime blues tinge.Try to attend a guitar camp this year you'll meet plenty of talented female guitarists.

Did I miss anyone mentioning Elizabeth Cotton or Memphis Minnie. I also don't remember seeing Martha Masters or
Elena Pompadrou(?) in the classical guitarists. Ms. Cotton was a huge influence on much that has happened in the acoustic guitar world in my lifetime.

A couple of people have already mentioned Mary Flower and I think she is an amazing player! She was at PSGW (guitar camp) where I spent a week last summer and it was wonderful to hear her in person and sit in on one of her impromptu classes. She has a bunch of CD's that are readily available.
Oh, and this month's Acoustic Guitar has a nice piece on Maybelle Carter; she was one of the first country guitar stars in the world and everyone who plays country checks her out.

Cheers,
David

Camps ... yes... that's something I'm looking into this year and I should actually start teaching at some. How much fun would that be??? :)

Thanks, everybody, keep them coming. A lot of the names I know but have never delved into their music, or I forget about them. So I'm glad we have this to remind us all! And I always love an excuse to check out music I haven't heard before.

I don't know if you got this reply before, but Patty Larkin plays a Strat like no one else. Her genre is sort of electric folk, with some great jazzy melodys and blistering leads. Great singer/songwriter; she lives on outer Cape Cod, mostly gives benefit performances these days. Her CDs are great but don't do her live playing justice.

Heard a live version of "Diamonds and Rust" the other day, and what an atmosphere Joan Baez can create with that old banger she plays. Not necessary technically brilliant but a great musician.

Hi Leanne,

Browsing the chat, I found your question. Have two suggestions for you. You already have Vicki Genfan who is very percussive and plays a lot of alternative chords fingerstyle. I have seen her twice in Orlando and once at the Florida Folk Festival and she deserves the tital Best New Guitarist of 2008.

The other name I don't see mentioned is Muriel Anderson. Our local guitar society hosted her twice as did many other organizations in central Florida. Muriel is drop dead cute and plays any style you can throw at her. She is the only women every to win Best Fingerstyle at Winfield, KS "National Guitar Championships". Also a harp guitarist, she will astound you with her skill at nylon, steel, or harp. Known for her constant performing on tour, Muriel has put together evenings with other artists called "All Star Guitar Night" and is a featured guitarist on the CD of all female guitarists "LaGuitara", and has written methods for Hal-Leonard and Mel Bay.
