Acoustic Guitar Community

Welcome to the Acoustic Guitar Community.

Ok, i have been doing some research on some guitars lately.  What I am looking for is a Dreadnought guitar up to about $650.  Some that I have looked at are the Taylor 110's the Seagull S6 or all wood Maritime.  I want the best bang for my buck. I am not one who needs to pay extra just for the name. I want a good steel-string acoustic that will give me many years of enjoyment.  Any type of help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Play some Yamaha and Epiphone guitars. Try an Ovation as well.

Purchasing an acoustic guitar is a personal thing for many. Sometimes very personal. I for one took quite sometime trying out many different kinds of acoustic before choosing the Taylor 714ce. "Bang for the buck" doesn't always apply. When you find the one that calls out to you my best suggestion is to have saved enough up for it.

Someone else mentioned in another post that one of the best things you can do is become an educated consumer. I couldn't agree most.
I agree, shop around for an instrument and buy the one that sounds best TO YOU. Take a friend with you who can play. Then sit in front of the instrument and see how different it sounds as compared to when you were playing it. Ovations are great guitars, Alvarez is another nice guitar (provided it was made back in the early 80's) Epiphones, Martins almost all name brand guitars today will be quality instruments that will last you a lifetime.
If it is not absolutely essential for you to get another guitar, wait until you find one you really like. G.A.S. has led many of us to buy guitars we probably should not have purchased. If we had waited we could have purchased something so much better then the $500 - $600 guitars we later regretted buying. I have been done this road so many times. I finally saved, and saved, and saved, and now have some guitars that are very special. Patience my friend. Patience.
Well if i knew that i was gonna really get serious about playing guitar I might consider getting something more expensive. However, I really need something affordable that is good quality(my current guitar is junk) :). I've read some reviews and i know there are good instruments that don't cost a fortune, i just need to find out which one that is. Thanks for the help everyone!
Check out the Martin Backpacker. It's not expensive and I've heard good things about it.

I was just able to find a used Martin DM for around $600, a few years old and a just little wear, but it sounds amazing. You might want to check your local Guitar Centers or other music stores to see what's floating around. If you're going to keep it forever anyways, buying used might get you something you couldn't have otherwise afforded.

So, It's been over a year now.  I'm curious ... what did you finally buy?

If I were buying in that price range, I would go for Either the Seagull Maritime SWS or one of the Epiphone Masterbilts

Check out Wechter guitars, really nice, made in China in a factory Mr Wechter set up, and he goes back 2-3 times a year to check up.  All guitars are shipped to his plant in the US, where they go over the guitar and set it up before shipping.  Great sounding, low action guitars, for a reasonable price

Hey Tom,

I remember my first foray into the "very first dread".....can be an intimidating experience for sure.....A really well made

dread ismade by, believe it or not, Epiphone. It's one of the guitars in the "Masterbuilt Series". I've been around guitars

since the mid-60's fnd have been very impressed at the build quality, tone, and projection of all the Masterbuilt's. Check

them out at a Gibson dealer. $650.00 may not seem a lot of money to spend to some people, but it's still hard-earned

cash. There so many builders out there now, and there's n o reason why you cant get a fine sounding " all solid wood"guitar.

Take time, and play as many
