Welcome to the Acoustic Guitar Community.

Folks, I am trying to get an idea of what is teh recomended or standard learning path for guitar, i.e., chords, keys, scales, notes, fretboard (not necessarily in that order), but you get the drift.

If you were to take a beginner, what path would you have them follow?

With that, if the person knew some chords, what direction would you give there?

I'm an "older and wiser" guy, so maybe I have some worthwhile advice?? When I started playing guitar I had to teach myself, like almost everyone did. We had thin pulp lyrics mags then that had lyrics with chord diagrams above each line. That was a wonderful way to learn because it also allowed you to sing along and develop a feel for rythym and strumming patterns. Still you can find some lyrics with the chords above. Learning chords also helps you learn scales as well as picking.

Over the years I probably bought every Mel Bay and Chet Atkins book plus every other guitar instruction manual available! I floundered around with trying to teach myself until finally I bought a guitar course that turned out to be the best lessons I had ever used. I started understanding more and faster than I ever thought possible. If you want to check it out there is a link to my instructor on my website, fretwalker.com . He isn't cheap, he's just the best, period.

Good luck with your playing - consider it a lifelong adventure - sing, and write some songs along the way because that is your legacy. Just shredding or learning some tabs doesn't give you the full pleasure of music.
