Your favorite recordings of singers with solo guitars

One of my favorite settings is that of a singer songwriter who I am used to hearing with a band, taking the stage by themselves. Just the purity of the essence of the song, the voice and the guitar. Some of my favorites have been the Bruce Springsteen solo tours, Steve Forbert, is also a joy regardless of how cranky he seems onstage :), and the evening of Guy Clark, John Hiatt, Lyle Lovett and Joe Ely a few years ago was a treat.

Anybody else enjoy this type of music? What are your favorites?

Neil Young's "Live at Massey Hall" is incredible.
I was surprised that in AG's 240 Essential Acoustic Albums they opted for Neil Young's "Live at Canterbury House" instead. On that one he sounds really unsure of himself and not there yet as a solo performer. On Massey Hall, he's confident and not at all afraid to sing loud. Great recording.
While it isn't solo guitar, this one stands out for me. The Acoustic Strawbs. They were a progressive rock band in their day. They took these overblown, overproduced, progressive rock songs and played them with such feeling on acoustic guitars. I was totally amazed, the essence of the songwriting really came through. Give them a listen and keep an open mind.
Devon Sproule, blurs the divide beween acoustic and electric.

Michael Jerling is an amazing song writer and an excellent guitar player.

I remember many years ago walking into a guitar shop called Rockin' Robins in Houston and seeing Laurence Juber.  There were only a handful of people in the store but we were treated to a wonderful collection of songs that Laurence played for us from his CD "Solo Flight"...After that I became a big fan!  I think Laurence is one of the most gifted guitarists I have ever heard.  Check out some of his videos on You Tube.  Laurence used to be a former member of Wings and shared some wonderful stories that evening about playing with Paul McCartney..It was a evening I'll always remember!  Solo Flight is a remarkable CD by the way...Great music!
Neil Young "Live at Massey Hall in 1971" ... Practically every one of his early hits played alone in a spare acoustic setting.  Great CD!

Also, this one from about 2005 ... "Heart of Gold" concert filmed by Jonathon Demme at Ryman Auditorium.  Here, Neil solos on the bare stage with nobody in the house.  Haunting arrangement of this song, especially in a building with that many ghosts lingering ... "The Old Laughing Lady".  Awesome!

The late Steve Goodman, wins hands down for me. He wrote "City Of New Orleans" , Arlo Guthrie, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and others made it popular. Probably the one I liked the best was about talking backward. Steve was also one of the more talented musicians I ever seen play, he did more with one guitar than I ever could with three. He did a show on Austin City Limits that gets a lot of play time here. I really miss Steve.

I've been looking everywhere for a tab of Talk Backward... Would you happen to know where to find it, or would you have it? I tried to look at the youtube videos, but I'm not good enough to pick up on what he is doing... I'd have to slow it down quite a bit.

Old thread resurrected!  You'll have to dig for these, but Harry Chapin and Jim Croce on DVD.  Yes, Harry has two other guys with him, and Jim has one other, but still...  I'll get the titles and update this...  And of course, Tommy Emmanuel!
Around down here they have a lot of acoustic guitar pulls, and it's great to see:  Robert Earl Keen, Randy Rogers, Charlie Robison, Stoney LaRue, Cody Canada, and Chris Knight all on one stage swapping song.
