Hi guys 'n' gals,I think I'm having a neck issue with my 2012 Maritime SWS dread. A straight edge down the fretboard drops below the bridge by about 1/16", and I've had to take the saddle down…Continue

Comment by Jud Hair on April 11, 2012 at 8:20am Blues --- Yep ... I have first hand experience with assuming that all saddles were the same and buying a 3/32 " when I needed the 1/8 " ... that was an immediate disaster! And even with a proper 1/8" saddle, if the slot is a little wide and the saddle can "rock" around even a little bit, you're left with sort of the same situation.
As folks buy saddles and bridge pins for Seagulls, it's important that they know that Seagulls take the 1/8 inch wide, fully compensated saddle ... and they require the "presentation" style bridge pins rather than the standard style.
Graphtech and Bob Colossi both can supply the proper size for Seagull.
Comment by Blues Agent on April 10, 2012 at 11:00am Yes, on the 90 degree angle subject... if I am not mistaken, Martin saddles are 3/32", as opposed to the standard 1/8", and putting a Martin saddle in a different bridge can cause enough slant to possibly affect intonation.
Comment by Jud Hair on April 10, 2012 at 10:42am Yep ... staying completely square is crucial. A perfect 90 degree angle of saddle to bridge very important ... also a good, tight ("press") fit in the slot is important and beneficial. If the saddle has any excessive "play" in the slot and it tilts forward (or backward) under string tension, you will have intonation problems.
Comment by Blues Agent on April 10, 2012 at 10:27am For those Seagull owners who may want to experiment with action and different saddle heights.... after emails with Godin and Graph Tech, I confirmed that the Tusq saddle used on the Seagull is Graph Tech #9281. Currently, it is not on the Graph Tech website saddle order page, but is available through their toll free phone #. I ordered three and found this Tusq saddle to sand down reasonably easy... I usually attach a piece of course sandpaper to a clipboard and move the saddle's base back and forth on that, being careful to end up with a square (right angle) base.
I am also experimenting with Martin's Acoustic FX strings (Light). They have a flexible core and the idea is to give the tension of lights (.012) with the flexibility of extra lights (.010), but the jury is still out.... I may just use extra lights and adjust the neck, if necessary.
Me, too! No offense taken. It was funny! Reminds me of the saying, the older I get the better I was! ;-p

Comment by Ron Khoo on April 9, 2012 at 4:41pm All I can say is I am so good that I squawk as good as Florida's squawking gulls. Which is not the most soothing sound imaginable.
Not exactly saying that either, it's just I was playing clubs, and colleges 6 days a week, so my chops were better, then. That doesn't mean a whole lot to anyone else but me though. I never had a record put out, though we did do demos, nothing really caught on. Even so, my approach for the last year, has not focused on cleaning up the odd mistake when I play a tune. There's been no pressure sitting in my living room or folks to judge me playing, so I'm not always doing my best.
At this point, though, that's something I want to correct. I'm hoping the recorder will make me focus more on my playing, and up the quality of my musicianship enough that I can play out at some coffee houses, or open mikes. So far, hearing myself caught in a recording helps me pinpoint the areas needing improvement..
