Welcome to the Acoustic Guitar Community.

Hi Everyone,

As the discussion title states, I'm New2Guitar.  I've been playing for 5 weeks and wanted to introduce myself with a little story:

Back in the early 90's I dated this girl and she bought me  a   new  guitar for the Xmas of 92.   We lived together, she moved out  and she said, keep it!  So it sat inside the hard case in my bedroom for 18 yrs. Understand, I know nothing about guitars, so I select a teacher and bring it to my first lesson.  I tell him the same thing I just told you, it was given to me and it's been sitting for 18 yrs.

Well, he takes the guitar, tunes it and plays it. His comment; Amazing sound!  He relates, I've never known, until now, someone having a Martin HD28, and letting it age for 18 yrs before it was played for the first time. He then educated me on Martin's, their guitars and how lucky I am to have a HD28 to learn on.

I'm five weeks into learning the learning process.  For the first few weeks my fingers couldn't handle the light strings.  I've now developed some very nice callouses and practice 2 hours a day.  To make music is such a great experience.  I think I've become OCD.  Time will tell.

Regards,
Chuck

what a wonderful dream come true for a guitar player. You'll never have to buy another one unless you just want to. That's great to hear you're putting forth effort in learning. It'll pay off if you keep it up. I've been a guitar tech for years but only knew a few chords needed to set up the guitars. I can tell you just about everything you want to know about a guitar, except how to play it well. I understand the dynamics but just need to practice. I use online lessons with Jamplay. It really makes it easy and enjoyable. I had a guitar teacher but they were trying to teach me their interpretation of how to learn, and it was expensive (35 dollars for half an hour). Jamplay cost just 20 dollars a month, and you can access it 24/7. which makes it easy to schedule my lessons. Also, they have several teachers so you can pick through the bunch until you find one you like. Oh yeah, it works out to be just 66 cents a day compared to one day a week for 4 weeks costing $140.
Don't let anyone talk you out of the Martin because you have one fine instrument with years of enjoyment ahead of you. Take care Chuck and play on!

Hi Lonewolf,
I'm curious about how you chose Jamplay. I am looking into online lessons, and am about to join Guitar Tricks because they have a special now for $99/year AND because their lessons are downloadable--which means I can work offline. I would love any input you can provide about the two.
Thanks,
Sandy
DROOOOOOOOL!!!! I'd give my eye teeth to have a Martin like that!!! I've been at this git thing about 1 1/2 years. I love my 2 Epiphones, but a Martin....................... Keep It Fun. Dean
I have an 34 year old Martin D-28 that is my "home" guitar (sees NO road use) but it's been played for all it's years! Your Martin will only sound better and better! What a stroke of luck you have had...that guitar will teach you...just be patient and always make sure you are having fun! Looking forward to talking to you here as you come along, Edward

What an incredible story! Thanks for sharing it.
Hee hee... I see Linus already beat me to the punch.... "No really, I'll take that old, stale guitar off your hands, so you can buy yourself a shiny new one... (insert evil chuckle here)

But seriously, what a great and heartwarming story that was Chuck! Keep us updated on your progress as you climb that musical hill.

:~)
Hi New2,
Great story! Now, giving credit where credit is due, I hope your former girlfriend has aged as well as the guitar!
Walt
