Acoustic Guitar Community

Welcome to the Acoustic Guitar Community.

. . . will not be my last. Actually, I played in a sub-group started by the leader for beginners. We played a few bluegrass tunes. I got lost a number of times but hit the groove a few times, as well. That felt really good.

We then went and sat in with the more experienced players. I couldn't contribute much, as I didn't know the songs. Nevertheless, I enjoyed myself. I did join in singing a verse of "Shenendoah" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." It's funny, I don't sing well, but it sounded pretty good and I had no nerves.

All in all, it was a great learning experience. Next time, I'll be more comfortable. Maybe I'll even take my turn. I'm just happy I took the step and tried. Thanks to Tom H for inviting me.

Bravo, Dan!

That's a milestone, getting up the nerve to play in a jam situation. You're an inspiration!

Are you going to play with these folks again soon? Keep us posted!

You might want to check out this jam, Taz. It's in Mt. Gretna on Monday nights, mostly bluegrass. There's a beginners group and the regulars. Let me know and I'll send you the details.

Way to go, Dan. I've never had the opportunity to do that but would like to. Did you do anything to prepare for it?

Music, just like so many good things in this life, is meant to be shared!

Yea, Dan! I'm glad it was a good experience and that you'll go back. There's nothing like playing with others to hone your skills in ways you don't even realize, plus it's so much fun. "I got lost a number of times but hit the groove a few times, as well. That felt really good." That'll keep you coming back!

I'm sure this will cause me to practice more.

Rex, I tried to learn some basic bluegrass tunes, about four or five. I practiced a few times with Tom and once with Tom and Sharon, a fiddle player. It's really hard when you start. Playing with others means playing in time. If you blow it, you have to keep going -- no do overs like when you're alone.

The hardest part is not being familiar with the music. If you get lost in a popular song that you know, you have a reference point. When you lose your place in a bluegrass tune with no lyrics, it's really difficult to pick it back up.

Everyone is so nice. It seems like even the accomplished players remember when they were learning so they are friendly and encouraging. Even the mere act of sitting around with others, instruments in hand listening to others and enjoying the love of music is really priceless.

No matter what happens, I know two things: I'll be a little better next week than I am today and I'm never going to stop playing. Thanks to all my friends here on the AG board for their encouragement. I don't know if I could have made the leap without you. A special shout out to Tom who inspires me because I know he's as scared as I am, but plows ahead anyhow. Those of you who haven't tried it, do it. Even if you start playing with one other person, you will enjoy it more and play better. God willing, I'll go back next Monday!

I think I messed up the reply but I was saying good for you and I told you so. As you say there are no do-overs but you will be surprised how often you get lost and recover . Soon you won't get as lost. I missed the jam today had to much other work to do. I will be back next week one of the members just sent me a song to try and learn for next week. . This is sometimes how we try and get ready. The thing is we may or may not play it . We just did a public performance for the local churches in the town where we play. It was about an hour show and it came off real well. Keep jamming Dan .
