I would really appreciate a "Dummies Guide to Alternative Tunings"

Check out Kyser K-Lever series of Partial Capos. They put a standard tuned guitar into alternate tunings without retuning the guitar. There are four different color coded capos.
Drop D
Double Drop D
DADGAD
Open G
All have the K-Lever which Premier Guitar Magazine described at "pure genious".

Use Google...it's all there.
try....the following tunings....you can experiment and find your chords
DADGAD
DADGBE
DGDGBbD
DADGBD
DGDGBD
DADADF#

if you're a thumbpicker, you will love some of these
there are some cool chord generators online
