Hello all!! I am going to be working with Antoine Dufour in August for the Luthier Festival at the Wells Fargo Center on the 14th-16th. He is playing a show with Don Alder at the Russian River Brewing Company the night of the 16th and I am trying to get him some shows around the Bay Area. Does anyone have some good ideas where Antoine could play? I want to have him play in Sebastopol, Fairfax, SF, Berkeley and maybe in the South Bay. If we get enough good venues, there is a possibility that Craig D'Andrea would be joining him. Any suggestions would be great as I am working with the record label to start the bookings ASAP. The dates are from August 17th- August 23rd or 27th if we get a lot of shows. Thank you.

I'd like to invite all ya'll to The Sleeping Lady in Fairfax on Wednesday, May 13, 9:00 pm. I'll be performing with Teja Gerken (see above) and Steve Baughman. We'll be taking turns tickling the strings.

Lisa, thanks for the words of wisdom regarding the "open Mic." I do just need to take the first step. Don't know if I know enough songs to play for a long amount of time but maybe one or two and then run off the stage and out the front door.
I'm thinking about trying to go to Mission City this Thurs and just watch the way things are done. Might make it easier knowing how it works.

Cheryl to play at your daughters wedding ! It just couldn't get any better than that.
Thank you for the work of encouragement.

Hi Dan,
I've been playing about 5 years...coming up on six. Started playing in front of the family, then with friends who might be hanging around. Then it was backyard parties with other musicians in my area. One of my friends has a very nice PA system. That was my first experience playing through an amp. It's totally different and I had a very difficult time figuring out where I was vocally. That was my biggest challenge. I bought an amp, mic, etc. and I sometimes listen to myself through headphones. When my husband travels I set up my rig in the living room and practice, and with the nice weather, I played outside today. You've got to try different settings, different places, etc. You have to create various situation you might be playing in and practice. I like to play standing up, so I practice standing up. Well, a couple of months ago I did my first open mic in Benicia. It was very low key and a very supportive audience. I was very happy with my performance (3 songs/15 minutes). Now I'm going to play a gig at a winery. It will be a Friday night event for their wine club members. I have 2 hours worth of material and it's material I'm very comfortable with. That's also important. I would say just play in front of as many different people in as many different situations as possible. I played in the conference room at my office (someone's birthday) with 8 people there and I was more nervous in that situation than the open mic! That really surprised me, but they were all sooooo close! So, you never know. Just try to expose yourself as much as possible. Next.....my daughter's wedding in June! Good Luck. Let me know how it goes. Cheryl

The first time at an open mic is terrifying! You MUST do it again within a week, and do it regularly after that. Then it just keeps getting easier.

After looking at this post, I guess you could substitute just about anything for the words "open mic"!

Daniel.

Welcome to the group!

Regarding playing an open mic, you might do it in stages. You already play with your friends in your guitar group. You might have people in the group play solo and duo for each other some time and use that as a first step. You can play for friends and family. It also is helpful to go to the open mics. I haven't done one in a few years, but when I was doing them regularly, there were some times when there were hardly any spectators. That might be an easy time to do your first public performance.

Finally, Ty Murray, the cowboy who is on Dancing with the Stars, said a funny line one night when talking about going out to dance in front of the crowd. I paraphrase here, because I can't remember it exactly: "It's like bull riding. You're never ready, but the shoot opens anyway."

Good luck. If I'm ever down in Morgan Hill, I'll look you up.

Been playing for five years and loving it. I'M trying to get the nerve to go to an open mic but am just not there yet. Mostly because I'm nervous.
Id like to read some of your comments and discussions and maybe make some new friends.

I host an Acoustic Guitar Group in Morgan Hill Ca. We have been doing it for some time now and Ive met a lot of great picking people. If your in the area give me a shout and we would love to meet you.

Morgan Hill CA. Adult Beginners Guitar Group

We get together the first Tues. of the month. We play Acoustic Guitar, mostly Rock from from the 60's and 70's. We will try just about any music if you bring it.

Sample of what we like:

As always, if you live in the Morgan Hill Ca. area (between San Jose and Monterey) come to a jam and check it out. We are adult beginners and just like to have fun with it.
Everyone is welcome and don't be shy. We have had as many as nine show up and as little as two.
