Welcome to the Acoustic Guitar Community.

Okay, somebody here knows this, I'm sure. How to sketch out tab for a song?

I have an old favorite from the early 1980s by a kid who had a few hit records and then kind of evaporated. To make matters worse, he's from Canada. I have spent years hitting eBay off and on, secure in the knowledge that the last three remaining Corey Hart piano and guitar books are trading hands about two days after I log in, or about three days before.

So it occurs to me that it might be good exercise to try to rebuild this thing, myself. I'm pretty sure about the lyrics, and I have them all nice and pretty. And I can sing the melody, so I at least know that much. But how do you flesh out the chords behind it all?

But how do you flesh out the chords behind it all?

Well how do you play a flute? You blow in one end and run your fingers up and down the outside.

To flesh out the chords simply study chord progression and theory for 5 years and it will just come to you. Sorry for being blunt but the only way you can really do it is to have studied how to do it. There is no over night method that I know of. The trial and error method (which is extremely tedious and not accurate) is all you have if you have no theory knowledge. Even if you find the chords on line you can't be sure that they are correct. So many people who think they know something become experts when they can put it up on line. You ever notice how many different chord progressions you can find on the web when you search for a song? Just the lyrics alone are generally misrepresented half the time.

So how are you supposed to get the chords? Find someone who knows his theory and is familiar with the song to help you. That could be your start to get a grasp on theory and chord progression. It really is worth knowing so I encourage you to continue your quest.
So what specifically is the song? I'm assuming the artist is Cory Hart?
