Acoustic Guitar Community

Welcome to the Acoustic Guitar Community.

A few years ago I was musing on the following thought: the Rapture comes, you go to Heaven, God smiles on you and says that He likes guitar, but due to the vast number of guitarists there (hahaha), you need to limit yourself to playing 10 tunes ... for eternity!

Which 10 would you choose?

Here are mine...I *think* (all of which I've recorded)--not in any particular order:

Hyfrydol (the tune for many hymns, including Not Alone for Mighty Empire)

Castle of Dromore (also called October Winds)

Le Mans an original of mine

Amazing Grace

The Kid on the Mountain
(the greatest piece of Irish dance music, IMHO)

Be Thou My Vision
(hymn, based on the Irish tune called Slane, beautifully done by Martin Simpson under the folk song name, Banks of the Bann)

Turf Lodge
(Scottish pipe jig, written by the late, great piper, PM Angus McDonald, and recorded by the Tannahill Weavers)

Sheebeg and Sheemore (Carolan)

Mo Giulla Mear - Irish song

Song for Sheila I wrote for my wife.

Dude! There's only one, ya know, that like, can be played, ya know...."Stairway to Heaven". Dude!

:-)

Seriously though, too hard to pick (no pun intended).

Rgds,
Joe
LOL!

....but if you got to play only that for eternity, you might wonder whether you were in the right place <:)

El
El, I'm with you solid, brother, on Sheebeg Sheemore. Just a great piece.

JS Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring: not only to suck up to this Odd God of yours, but because it is a perfect piece of music.

Saltflat Rhapsody: a Chetty / Merley original

Angels We Have hard On High: admittedly, more sucking up, in the hopes that God would let me off the hook every century or two to play a bit of banjo). I have posted a PDF transcription of my own arrangement of AWHHOH in G tuning in the Christmas Arrangements section.

Mona Ray by Leo Kottke

Microphone Fever by Rick Ruskin

Rue Du Romie: a wistful original in double-drop-D

Anji by Davey Graham

Bach's Brandenburg Concerto #3, first movement: hell, I wish I could play this NOW. But that why they call it heaven, right?

The Hymn Of Ordinary Motion: Jerry Douglas, Russ Barenberg, Edgar Meyer

Thanks for posting this idea, El. Very cool.

S
LOL. Good stuff, Steve.
Okay -- I call the following tunes... no recalls

1. Jock O'Hazeldean
2. For Ireland, I'll Not Say her Name
3. Misty -- (I still need to polish off the bridge)
4. The Water is Wide
5. Planxty Polly (song written for my wife)
6. Amazing Grace (me too El)
7. Ashojen Farewell
8. Somewhere over the Rainbow (need to learn the unknown intro Polly keeps bugging me to learn)
9. The Sourthwind
10. Fanny Power

Lots of celtic there I suppose -- but isn't God Irish? Celtic? okay ancient. :)

There's so much good stuff there, Tim, you are making me reconsider my list <:)

Dunno about eternity, but some of these I've been playing for forty-plus years, and my wife might think that feels like forever.

Angie/Anji/whatever
Stay
Blue Smoke (badly)
The Minstrel Boy/Rosin the Bow
Greensleeves variations (deranged from the Cutting version)
Boys of North Tyne (aka Boys of Blue Hill)/Harvest Home (after Joe Hutton)
Deep River Blues
Boy you folks got some serious music to play. I may have to spend some of my "rapture time" hanging and listening to your music.

Asa more novice player in a different area of acoustic music here are ten that I truly love to play and could play them for a long time. The order has no significance.

(1) One Dime Blues - Blind Lemon Jefferson
(2) Untrue Blues - Blind Boy Fuller
(3) Jivin' Woman Blues - Blind Boy Fuller
(4) Pig Meat Strut - Big Bill Broonzy
(5) Mopper's Blues - Big Bill Broonzy
(6) G Medley - Medley of Miss. Joh Hurt songs in G
(7) Worrying You Off My Mind - Light'n Hopkins
(8) Blue Railroard Train - Delmore Brothers
(9) Monday Morning Blues - Miss. John Hurt
(10) Blues in A - Doug Jones

I suspect after the big rapture a bunch of us acoustic blues folks would be hunkered down in a shanky nightclub part of the big place and jamming tunes. Good lighting, terrific speakers and amps, well mic'd and that terrific soundman. I know my wife and her friends would be waiting for some good jumping blues numbers so that they could start their dancing. I imagine that loads of us would be jamming to the above and the ones that others share. Cool, that would sweet! I imagine it to be a terrific time.

Thanks for the imagination trip El. I have been looking up the songs that folks have listed and wow some terrific songs. You guys are da bomb. Eric -

LOL! A lot of blues for a heavenly place <:)

be well,

El
What a concept! Ten tunes for God, over and over again. Is that guitar store hell, or heaven?

I see some tunes on other lists that I'd pick too. Here's mine:

"Embryonic Journey" by Jorma Kaukonen
"Misty" by Erroll Garner
"Misionera" by Fernando Bustemante
"Triste" by Antonio Carlos Jobim
"Manha de Carnival" by Luiz Bonfa
"Samba de Orfeu" by Luiz Bonfa
"The Claw" by Jerry Reed
"Anji" by Davey Graham
"The Water is Wide" Ed Gerhard's version
"Bella Donna" by Peppino d'Agostino (because it'll take me an eternity to get it right)

Only 10, huh? Good God, that's tough. :)

Cheers,

David
Hmmm…

St Louis Tickle – Dave Van Ronk

Candy Man – John Hurt

Windy and Warm – J Loudermilk

Good News Waltz – Mary Flower

Anti Blues Matters – Doc Rogers

Guitar Rag – Merle Travis

Hard Times – Stephen Foster

Evening Sun – Delmore Brothers

Would You Like to Play the Guitar- Pat Donohue

Temptation Rag – Trad, Andy Cohen Arr.

And boy, only ten was hard. Nice thread, folks
Hey Short and Shy about it,
Do you have a recording of how you do Blue Railroad Train? That's a great tune, but I only hear it with the DB harmony in my head. Would love to hear a new slant on it to provoke my copying... oops, I mean creative....juices.
Thanks, Doc
