Hi David...you are fortunate! Most 12-strings I have found, were sold as "new" but needing a set-up, or "plays fair" and we all know what that means......Guild 12's have a very nice tonal voice. Any samples yet?

Joseph, I'm lucky. My Guild 12 came with a perfect setup. Now it's purely up to me to play well.

Ed, that's a beautiful arrangement of a beautiful tune. Thanx for posting it.

A first "wrong" experience with a 12-string can leave a lasting impression....on your attitude towards them, and on your finger-tips...If your luthier is astute, and is aware of the finer-qualities of set-ups, your experience can be breathtaking, and rewarding. It's like a good marriage...String height, saddle string spacing, nut spacing and height, truss-rod, and applicable choice of strings can make, or break the honeymoon. Find a qualified set-up man or woman, and the cost for this overhaul will be of no concern. I have found the most critical aspect of a 12 string set-up is the relationship of the saddle/nut spacing...too close, and the rattles will drive you insane...too wide, and the missed-single-articulation will make you believe you just can't play ....But when it's correct, Move over leo!

Check out John Wilson's page on this forum to hear some wonderful finger-picking 12 string guitar. He's on You Tube, too. He has some arrangements that I would describe as haunting, like this one - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQzaGZNFU50

Fingerpicking a 12 is interesting. When you hit a pair of strings with a flatpick or thumbpick, the treble string gets most of the energy and makes most of the sound; but when you pluck with a finger, it's the bass string that gets the emphasis. I try to keep that in mind when working out an arrangement on the 12.

Nancy, absolutely you can fingerpick a 12 string. Take a look at Leo Kottke, Peter Lang, Leadbelly...and many others. Here is an example from Kottke (Killer tune to boot..."Air Proofing II): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKSSN_KfJ60

Nancymae: Absolutely!! I fingerpick my 12-string guitars all the time. Requires a little more pressure than fingerpicking a six, but it'll become easy after a while.

I agree with the need for "diligent practice." I my case reduced diligence was related to a lack of focus on a particular genre. There are so many guitar styles out there; it was difficult for me to find my niche. I've always been moved by music of artists such as Hedges, Kottke, de Grassi. etc., but never understood how to play that style of music. The resources on the internet such as this one have made all the difference, and I look forward to learning much more.

Maybe I should write a book?
