Hey Bob, thanks for the invite. I'll work on viewing Rob Bourassa videos you highly recommended. Maybe we can set something up some time to gain some finger style tips. Also, I was wondering if you knew of a local acoustic guitar club in the SD area. I've had no luck finding one. I've acutally considered the possiblity of putting one together of all levels to share knowledge, experience and just gathering. Thanks again.

I used natural nails up until about 4 months ago, when I finally tried a powdered acrylic coating, done by an experienced nail tech. Now in my 49th year of playing, I wish I had switched a long time ago. Rugged, durable, melodies much more pronounced. Sure made a huge difference for me.

Mario, I would just start with a simple 4/4 time pick pattern that repeated the same for each chord. This was you can train your fingers to go to certain strings. I remember when I first started finger picking. I made up a simple 1-2 3-4 pattern that repeated over and over. I hope this helps.

Too Many How Too's - I'm a beginner at guitar (1year) and have acquired a passion for the instrument. I'm descent at rythm and still honing in my skills there, but I've just started to delve into finger picking. I've found several websites and books on the subject to get started, but a little overwhelming on what to start with. Any advice from my fellow guitarists? Thanks and look forward to hearing from you all.

I wish I had Patricks genetics! I have used acrylic nails for over 10 years without any problems. My natural nails are dry, soft, and they split...so I got hooked on these...If your nail-person is aware of how nails grow, and makes sure of the quality and cleanliness of the materials used, they should last for over 30 days. ($9 bucks) I perform with them on a regular basis, and I depend on them. I tried several types of finger-picks, and nail-growth brush-ons, lots of gellatin, and they would never stay long enough, or work well enough to permit a consistant, dependable style of playing to develop. If you are not afraid to try, tell the nail-specialist that you do not want your nail beds ground away, that you want large plastic tips layed down, and keep the acrylic just a little thicker than a "regular" nail. If you find the right nail-people, they will become your friends! At 6'3" and 220 lbs, I was really intimidated the first few times, (all those pretty gals asking me "why" did I want my nails done?) but that very quickly wore off when my pick-patterns became so accurate, that I soon went to different, higher levels of performance, and my self-confidence soared. I hope this helps you try something new? You never know till you try!
