In response to Ian Miller's question on Asokan Farewell...  I learned the arrangement by John Lehmann-Haupt in standard notation.  It is available on Amazon.  I eventually wrote it out by hand in tab for my own use which is a good exercise and did not take very long.

I personally favor your version Mark.

But John Standefer also has a very nice version!

In response to Ian Miller's question about a good fingerstyle version of fiddler Jay Ungar's tune Ashokan Farewell: I know of a couple good ones. John Knowles - Chet Atkins' right-hand man - has a beautiful version in A. You can find John at FingerStyle Quarterly. I have a lovely version in G - part of which is on YouTube - in my Great American Tablature Songbook, and endorsed by Jay!

Does anyone have any insights/advice on the Judy Collins' version of Suzanne (the Leonard Cohen song)?  Tuning?  Chords?  TAB?

Another comment about Travis Picking: it's everywhere, even American Idol! 2012 winner Phillip Phillips' hit "Home" is a pinch-on-the-second-beat T.P. pattern.

I have some of Mark's books/cds/DVDs as well and learned a lot. One of the songs, Canyon Canon is a beautiful but simple song to play in standard tuning that you can use to warm up and practice with as well as being a nice song to play. It's all up and down the fretboard with ringing open notes combined with two fingered combinations that make it easy to work on your finger picking without too much concentrating on the chords, similar to what Jud was saying. And as Jud said, repetition is good!  ;-)

I also have some of Craig Dobbins stuff too and like his teaching too. He has one song called Street Wise that is all over the fretboard especially in the lower frets and it works out the left hand by going up and down the scales pretty quickly. I sat and practiced it until I could finally play it without thinking about it. I use it now as well to warm up the fingers.

We're so fortunate in this day and age to have all of the resources we have available such as the internet, with YouTube, and private sites that have an abundance of videos teaching songs and styles, but nothing beats good ole practice.   :-)

The best advice I ever got was for learning basic finger picking was this:

Choose the picking pattern you want to learn and then open-tune your guitar (C, G, E, something you like) so you can just concentrate on repeating the picking pattern until it becomes second nature and not have to waste energy holding down a chord.

Mastering the picking pattern requires nothing more than repetition ... lots of repetition.

Once you get the picking pattern down pat, then go back to standard tuning and begin to just wander around through various chord progressions over and over again.

At the risk of repeating myself ... repetition ... repetition ... repetition.

I have several of Mark's dvd's and I love them...It feels like he is sitting there just showing you how to do it...Very patient, very good instruction and I highly recommend his products. That being said there are many good instructional DVDs out there and I have tried many different ones. Yes some of the instruction is repetitive but I get a little something different from each one and in the long run it is a very inexpensive way to get great instruction from some great players who all have their own little bag of tricks. I get new ones all the time because I never want to stop learning!

I'm not sure if this has been dealt with before, but....

I want to get a great book/CD on Travis picking. I keep running into Mark Hanson's name and books......?

Anyone with experiences with his stuff?

If not, what other books have people found useful/successful?
