Will,
Having joined the ranks of retiredom, I jumped with 2 feet back into playing guitar. I had dabbled in lessons in Classical, Blues, and Jazz but always had difficulty finding the time to play regularly. A career and family kept me busy.
I'm now jamming in both Bluegrass and Blues nights, taking lessons again, and (this just goes to show you how deep the pool I jumped into is) I am playing Banjo, Mandolin, tenor guitar and bass. After 53 years of guitar only I've suddenly decided anything with strings! Somewhere in the back of my head I hear fiddle music!

It seems that I have arrived at a point six months from an age that I can retire with full benefits, which is to say that I might have the time I've wanted to learn to play guitar better than i did when I was in college. Not having time to teach myself to play or take lessons because of life pushing you around seems to be a situation others are in. Perhaps we can now all proceed to playing like we want on, I suspect multiple stringed instruments. Best of New Year and New Decade to you all finger style players. Lets all break out of playing in our "home music rooms" and get out in public in open mics or other playing opportunities.

Hi Folks, Glad to be here. I dabble in many styles of acoustic guitar, mostly related to bluegrass/mountain music. I am trying to teach myself the bluegrass style I hear most often on old Flatt/Scruggs records (yep, when Earl is finger picking the guitar). I'm also a big fan of the early Blues finger pickers and their protoges. I still have a long way to go, but look forward to learning from others here.

Jerry, Hi. I'm also getting close to retirement and am teaching myself fingerstyle. Yep, it's slow going, but I'm pressing on. I'll certainly be here supporting you. BTW, I bought my harp guitar from a Portland OR luthier, Mike Doolin. He's a great luthier!

Hi;
I'm Jerry Cowan from Portland Oregon.

I have always loved the acoustic guitar and wanted to increase my skills beyond learning chords and strumming tunes I grew up with.
Pursuing a career and raising my children has always taken up way too much time and music has been on the back burner most of the time.
Now that my kids are grown and have wonderful families of their own and I am approaching retirement I find I have more time to work on my playing.
For the past year I have been home schooling myself on fingerstyle country blues and Travis picking styles of playing. It's slow going and sometimes frusterating but this is what I love to do.
I look forward to participating and learning from the many talented players in the Fingerstyle Players group.

Hi Folks. I hope you all have been playing holiday tunes the last 3-4 weeks. I agree with Doug Y., that it takes a real commitment to re-work the barnburners if you can only play them for a month. But I love Christmas music and have a bunch of gigs, so I do it anyway! ALso, thanks to Acoustic Guitar magazine for printing my complete arrangement of Ellington's "Take the 'A' Train" is in the new issue. I recorded it on the Great American Songbook for Guitar CD, which came out early this year. I'm working on the transcription book for 11 tunes from that CD, plus my jazzy rave-up of I Left My Heart in SF. Back to work, Mark!! Have a happy new year! - Mark Hanson

Michael,
Awesome about your contact with Richard. If you are already familiar with him, you know you and your audience will have a great time.

Comprendo, Michael. I'll put a pin in my map for next time through. Thanks very much.
