Buying on Chance 34 Replies

If you're like me, you probably won't buy a guitar unless you can play it first. Is there an exception? That is: What guitar (or which guitars) would you buy without first taking a test drive (on…Continue

So what gorgeous wood is lurking among our group? What about binding, headstocks, and inlay? I thought we could post according to some categories, not so much as a contest (pretty subjective anyway)…Continue

The spongebob is a joke. Funny to look at though. The. Applause is so nice. Really. So is the Goya.  I ordered new wiring for the Applause. My first attempt at fixing the electronics. If I screw it up it really isn't a big deal. Found a new set up on AliExpress. All I will have to do is solder to the piezo under the saddle. Love the thing anyway.

Not the Sponge Bob? ;-)
There's a pink guitar with a heart-shaped soundhole on Goodwill now, if you want "bookends"...

For me it's the $22 Applause.

If $56 for a 1978 Yamaha G-55-1 is "cheap", then that was the best-sounding guitar I bought for "cheap". Won a Goodwill auction - you can see pics in a recently-added discussion in "Classical Cognoscenti"... I sold the Yamaha to my friend Dallas for $90 - I had cleaned it up and put D'Addario EJ46 strings on it (about $10 from local music store), so made $25! Woo-Hoo! ;-)
Worst sounding "guitar" I got for "cheap"? A Windaroo - a Chinese-made Ovation copy - that I rescued from a garbage can - so, in this case, "cheap" was free...but not necessarily a good thing...very high action, flat fretboard, alleged frets, POS materials...

For me...the last two acquisitions (one a bday gift and the other a surprise from Shopgoodwill) sound just blanking splendid.

Another question. When you buy a NEW guitar do you take the one you played to help you decide or ask the sales-biped to bring you another one?

Questions. General questions. What is the best sounding guitar you bought for cheap? How much did your favorite guitar cost when you bought it? Does price always correspond with sound? I ask these because I have found that price, at times, has nothing to do with the sound. I ask because some of the best sounding guitars I have didn't cost that much AND I bought them used.
