There are several USB to 1/4" audio interfaces (Stealth Plug, GuitarLink, Intelligent Instrument Cable) that will allow you to record so yes you can use them. Read the reviews as some seem pleased with there device and others aren't so happy.
Thank you for the speedy reply. I was wondering if the USB cords would work specifically with the free download of Audacity? I have the cable.
As in anything in life and electronics, some will like it, some won't. I think the USB cables should be an inexpensive way into the world of computer recording. Keeping my fingers crossed.
I use such an interface with Audacity with no trouble at all. For the record what I use is an EDIROL UQ-1X. If my memory serves me I paid $29 for it and it gives me two channels, not just the one that my sound card allows.
By the way, this would have been a good topic to discuss in the Audacity discussion. When anyone has tips or questions about Audacity I'd like to see people going to the same discussion group.

The cable should work with Audacity. You may have to change the settings in windows or OSX so that the cable is the default recording device. If you are in windows, do yourself a favor and try Kristal Audio Engine. These are the guys behind Presonus Studio One. It's a free download and supports vst effects in real time. So you can audition your effects before you commit.
