We have our own place here and no one posts. I thought there would be lots of "let's get together and jam" posts here if nothing else. What are you people doing? I'm trying to get a band started; we're playing an open mic on 10/03. I'm also thinking about trying to get a solo coffeehouse gig, but I'm not a very good singer (think Neil Young), so that's kind of intimidating. What are you folks up to?
I'm in the same boat. Seems kind of isolated here. I know there are other players around, but nobody ever seems available to jam. (or they know better than to call me )
I did an open mic in June, scared me half to death. I did, however, persevere and made it through my 3 song set.
Kent,
Where do you live? I'm always up for some jamming! The open mic thing doesn't bother me...it's only a 15 minute set. Playing solo for a couple of hours is another thing altogether!!!!!
What songs did you play, Kent? Was it a bar or a coffeehouse or something like that? What surprised you the most about the evening? What made you happiest?
Lastly, and mostly, are you thinking you'll do it again?

Anyone near Will County in Illinois?
I'd be interested in meeting some people and getting around a little. I'm not that good at this, but can be an ok rythym player in a folk/ country setting.
If you ask me to sing, I can pretty much assure you you won't ask me to do that again (haaa...).
Hey Dan! I'm in Bolingbrook! not to far from you! I've knocked around in Joliet quite a bit, always looking for new pickers! let me know! see you around.by the way ,what do you play
I played an open mic night last weekend, it went ok considering I was the only member of a 3 piece band that made it.
I hail from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan ( I know, it's closer to Canada than the Mid-West.) If anyone is close and wants to jam. But if anyone wants to share shows or needs an opening act I'm all for it. The roads been calling my name since my last tour...2 years ago.
Steve I have been doing this online thing since the middle-late 1980s. All we need is more people, and they are coming. The magazine is doing a great job of publicizing this place and eventually enough midwesterners will show up that things will start popping.
When I was running online forums for GE and Microsoft in the '80s and '90s, the numbers were about 5% of all of the visitors will ever leave a post. Some huge percentage of those people will never even return. They lose interest, they forget their credentials (account name, password), they forget the location of the discussion they were in. There are lots of reasons, but about a third of those who post never come back.
But all it takes is two people to have a conversation, and exchange ideas. And all you need is one blow-hard like me with an opinion to get someone else riled up enough to post something, and then you're off to the races.
I just got here myself about an hour ago. I played in the 1970s and put it away by 1980. Over the last few years I have noticed that there's something missing in my life, and started picking it all back up again. I'm nowhere near "good" yet, but I'm having a lot of fun and I'm learning a lot, too--thanks in part to magazines like Acoustic Guitar and Web sites like this one. So hang in there, man. Check back. Things are getting better.

Maybe we are covering just too big of a geographic area with this group. It is hard to make connections or to feel like a community with such a large area.
yeah, geographically it's a tad large to make any feasible connections. But in my experience, the mid-west comes out with some of the best and most honest music on the planet, despite the genre. So it's at least worth a shot:)

If we wanted to rattle some cages, we could start a campaign to expel a state or two. As an Iowan, I could support eliminating Missouri and Minnnesota. After this Saturday's game, I might include Wisconsin too.
It seems we acoustic players all face the same dilemma out here in the midwest, isolation. If you're not playing screaming electric guitar you're not playing, or at least that's how it seems. Anyone in the Lake Co. IL area or Kenosha WI area? I live just north of the cheddar curtain in Kenosha Co. and am looking for people to jam with and places to play. I'm one of the worship leaders at my church, located in Zion IL, and would like to play more often than twice a week. Any takers?
