John: An acoustic guitar (steel string) is just fine.  If you want to bring another kind that is fine.  We've had banjos, mandolins, bass and other instruments.  Anything acoustic works.  All kinds of styles/genres are played.  People bring song/lead sheets along of the songs they will play with copies (plus a couple extras) to give out to others. Originals are welcome and encouraged.

Great to hear Norman!  The jam I went to was great.  Highly recommended.  A great bunch of players.  I played my original and was told it's definitely open mic material.  The piece is definitely more structured than it was Saturday and still evolving.  My mistake was I completely forgot to play a section that has been around since inception!

My open mic went pretty well. I was the only fingerstyle guitarist there. Except for a few bars in one song where my hands were playing different strings, I didn't make any mistakes. I was asked to come back!
