I've never owned any Gibson and I realize this model is not exactly the premier example, but I have a chance to acquire a 1968 LG-0 and before I drive an hour to look at it, I'd appreciate some…Continue

String gauge / Martin size 5 4 Replies

Hallo - I've recently started playing my ’35 Martin 5-17t again and I'm finding the string gauge annoyingly narrow. I use a 13 (gauge of the high e) on my dread and a 12 on both my 00 and size 2…Continue

For those of you looking for short scale necks, I just noticed there are 2 models of Recording Kings available with 24.9" scale necks; RO-06 and ROJ-27-sn. Both are 000 bodies, 14 fret.

Well, matching guitars is always nice... ;-)

Yes, it went over real well. Aside from seeing an outrageous smile on a beautiful face, I get to hear a nice guitar being played on a daily basis.

My wife is at that point where she is struggling through changing bar chords with better speed. Interestingly she finds the task easier on the Larrivee than on her B-25. Both are short scale but the Gibson neck is narrower.

Mike Nepper's comments seem pretty much right on the money. I play a Gibson L130 Grand concert with a short-scale 1 11/16" neck (think Les Paul) and a Worland OM with a standard scale and 1 13/16 as well as a Telecaster. I jump between them pretty smoothly. I'm used to the difference, but I notice it, too. Adding my wife's guitars to the mix, I really feel the size difference.

When I finger pick the wider string separation is a blessing. When I cross-pick, the smaller spacing is preferable. I have a bit of tennis-elbow on my picking hand and it worries at me much less with her guitars. Probably means I'll start dropping hints that maybe I should get another parlor for me to play.

I'm pretty certain it did... ;-)

Michael - For our anniversary, I gave my wife a coupon for one windshield wiper (she'll have to buy the other as I got only one coupon when I bought the first set for my pickup) and I bought her a blue ray copy of Zombieland.

I sure hope the Larrivee went over better than Zombieland.

There sure are a lot of choices with small body 12 fret short scale acoustics! I recently played a Goodall 14 fret Parlor with a 25" scale length. This is quite doable too. The thing had quite nice volume for such a small body, but maybe lacking a little in the bass compared to a concert size. Still enjoying my 6 month old custom Talus 12 fret 24.9" short scale cutaway with 1 13/16" nut. Right now, this is the ideal set up for my hands. Now, if I pick up a standard scale guitar (25.5" or so), it really feels huge!

For our anniversary, I decided my wife needed a new guitar so I started looking for her new axe. I ended up with a Larrivee P09 lacewood parlor. I got a great deal from Elderly on a near mint used one from '10. Besides being pretty as all get out, it is lightweight, loud and well made. I put 11-52 DR strings as I found the D'Addario 12-54's over-drove the midrange and bass. Interestingly, the sweet spot for playing is very near the bridge.

My wife is a petite 5'3" and the Parlor fits her perfectly. While I was setting up the new strings, I ripped through some rapid cross-picking and fingerstyle numbers and the short scale 12 fret was a gas to play. I'm a big guy at 6'3" but I found the guitar quite comfortable.

If you get a chance, try one out.
