Okay fellow songwriters... I entered a songwriting contest with my song "Bernice" and if you like it I'm not too proud to ask for you to go to the link and vote for me.

I'm in 5th place at the moment so just scroll down till you see "Lon Milo DuQuette" . You can listen to "Bernice" and even watch a video of it... but please, if you like it, cast your vote for me. Thanks :-)

Hello everyone, my name is Patrick Dodd.  I am a social justice songwriter.  I have loads of stuff up at my website and I will submit some to the group for comment as soon as I get up to speed on the thread.  Glad you all are here.

Since you would be a professional song writer I would charge a minimum $200.00-$300.00. Be sure to retain your rights to the song. Have him sign a agreement that you retain rights to the song. Someone else may have other thoughts but that is mt .02 cents worth. Good Luck.

I need some advice ...

Here's the situation.  I was playing at a coffeehouse open mic a few weeks ago and a fellow heard a couple of my original songs and came up to inquire if I would "help him write a song for his wife" for their anniversary.

My first inclination was to say no, since I really didn't think I could come up with anything based on someone else's thoughts, feelings, experiences, etc.  But, I didn't say no, I just said give me some time to think about it.

Long story short, in a fit of inspiration the other night, I actually wrote what turned out to be a pretty good set of lyrics for a song that perfectly reflects what he was trying to achieve.

I've never written a song for anyone else before and I've actually never sold a song before.

So, here's the dillema.  How should I handle the "transaction" with this fellow??

At first I was just going to give it to him with my compliments ... but the more I though about it, the more I thought, hmmm, should I just give away my work??

Part of me would like to be able to say "I have *sold* a song."  just for the ego stroke. Another part would like to make a little cash too, but I have no idea what the song might be worth and what's more ... is it smart to sell a song outright.

I guess I just really don't even know what I don't know.

That's why I've come to you folks for advice ... what do you say????
