Why NO Acoustic Venues in Tampa and Area? 1 Reply

Hi Folks ... this is kinda funny. The number of TB AGPs seems to be as slim as venues there are to play in Tampa & area. I've been here 12 years now and still can't figure out why there's no…Continue

I'm not being negative about anything ... just factual. You, Mark, I'm gonna guess, probably have a day job ... I don't.  My day job for 40+ years has been pounding the pavement getting 'paying' gigs. My open mics and restaurants were all done back in the 70's and that was enough to last a lifetime. Musical integrity won't allow me to put on a very decent show in front of a chicken wing/beer suckin' baby boomer, who finishes his food, farts, then moves along to buy some new underwear and ends up at Kaireeokee somewhere.

A 'coffee house concert crowd'  may have become a thing of the past or for whatever reason can only be found in Europe and parts of Canada. Not interested in the Straz type venues at this point ... just looking for paying 'coffee house' environments with audiences hungry for new music.

Thanks for your name dropping, I'll check out what I can. Living in the Tampa Bay area for 13 years may not be enough time to qualify me to make comments about the local scene.

So, stop feeling frank and PEACE be with you ;>)

Alex,  I'm certain the reason you did not get any responses was because your post was very trollish and inflammatory.   firat of all. you completely discounted two venues where many of the people who frequent this posting board tend to flock to and enjoy.   Open mics and restaurants.   Let's face it.  when you rule those out.  What's left?   The Straz center I suppose. (Where I have seen some amazing acoustic music including Tommy Emmanuel and Richard Thompson)

Frankly I'm sorry you have such a negative attitude toward those bar/restaurants.  you are missing out on some brilliantly talented acoustic musicians like Greg West, AJ Julius, Scott (Twitch) Anderson, Micheal J. Weiss, Rob Tyre, Ben Bryan, Mike Tosier, Jayne Kelli, A.J. Swearingen... I could go on and on.  There really are an awful lot of them in the Tampa Area.

What about St. Pete?  The Ale and the Witch often has top notch acoustic entertainment.  As does the Hideaway.  Actually there are so many venues there that it's impossible to name them all.

Basically when you say there's no acoustic music scene in the Tampa area you convince me that you either do not live in this area or you are just trying to get a negative response out of people.

I frankly feel that this town has one of the most vibrant acoustic scenes I've seen in a while!

Hi Folks ... this is kinda funny. The number of TB AGPs seems to be as slim as venues there are to play in Tampa & area. I've been here 12 years now and still can't figure out why there's no acoustic music scene for a place so huge.

I'm not talkin' restaurants where 2 dozen hungry tourists fill their faces for an hour then go to the next place ... I'm talkin' REAL venues or Coffee Nouses who hire acoustic entertainment for a full evenings' performance. Waz Up Wit Dat??

So...  I've been a member of these forums for a couple of years and only just today discovered this group...

I see there hasn't actually been any activity in a year  but maybe it can get some new life breathed into it.

I have a casual acquaintance whom I see about once every few weeks,  he belongs to a playing circle somewhere here in the Tampa area.  I'll ask him for the specific details next time I run into him.

Has anyone gone to the Whistle Stop Grill & Bar  in Safty Harbor?

There is an organization called Tampa Bay Fingerstyle Players. Google it!

Good job starting another acoustic guitar oriented group. Most players want info on various techniques, gear, schools, teachers, jams, etc., and share musical knowledge about almost everything.

Let's start with: Does anyone know of an acoustic playing circle in Tampa and when and where do they meet?
