What is it about ukers? I, like every other uker I have met, have this fever to built a uke. I too bought the stew-mac kit but am planing using it to make a cigar box uke. Why? Hell I don't know. I think it has something about playing these little addictive toys that gives feelings of grandure. The "hey if I can play this thing I can surely build one". I also bought the Grizzly kit. not as nice as the Stew-Mac but it made a pretty good little "Jumping Flee". Being my first attemp I have a lot of pride in the fact that it will at least stay in tune.

T Willi, Im not as young as you may think.
The Beatles have been broken up for years.
40-50 and 60,s songs are my favorite
I like your idea on Wont you come home Bill Bailey. I think Im going to find the music and attempt to play/learn it.

What uke or ukes do you own??

I had to chuckle when I read that Daniel Z wrote "I like the older stuff, beatles ex". JUst shows how old I am. I like the older stuff too. But for me older is much older than the beatles. I like the whole "Tin Pan Alley" era. Man of the pop songs in the 1920's thru the 1930's were written on the uke and recomposed for other instruments. Now if you want to play a hopping song try "won't you come home bill bailey" Lot of swventh and nineth chords that seem to make a uku come alive.

Just thought Id post something because this forum has been slow lately.
I just got back from Santa Cruz ca. The group is called Sons of a Beach. There are about 70 or more people who go to the beach on Sat. mornings and play from 10-12 noon.
It is very organized and a lot of fun. It takes me about 50 min. to drive to Santa Cruz each time but its so much fun I dont mind.
If your in the area check it out. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Also I will share my excitement with you. I got a new uke this week. Its a Pono spruce top soprano and sounds great.

Please write something about your current uke adventures.

Hmmm...what kind of music...well, I mostly do stuff I write but the forms are more or less regular. One's a rag, ones a sort of tango, there's a rock-blues I haven't recorded yet...uh...easier if I just show you. I'll load 'em...

Hi
I was just browsing the groups and found this one and since I play Ukulele - which I know little about aside from tuning and chords - it seemed like a good place to find out more and fill in some blanks.

They both sound good. My ear is not so fine that I can tell the difference. However I can tell the difference in ukuleles at the shops that are not solid wood compared to my StewMacs. Im thinking about putting an under saddle pick up in one of them just to have some fun.

I have not used any other finish but would love to hear your opinion if you used something else.

Keep us posted.

Jeremy, First welcome.
I too wanted to build a guitar and started with a Stew Mac uke. Ive started playing the uke and am loving it.
Ive built two Stew Macs now and am starting one from scratch. ( Don't know how it will turn out) . But the stew macs turned out great.
On my first SM uke I wanted a shine. I put bindings on and finished it with tru-oil. I got it from Big 5 sporting goods but it can be had from any gun type store.
The key with tru-oil is to take a cotton ball and rap it in a cotton t shirt cut to size. Dip the cotton ball/t-shirt in tru-oil then wipe it on. After one or two times you will have figured it out. You can wet sand and give another coat if you like. I put on three coats then wet sanded with 600 sand paper and put another coat on. Just keep doing that until you get the look you want.

On the second one I wanted a dull finish. Like the Martin SO ukulele. I used min wax sanding sealer put on the same way. Then I used 600 wet sand and was done.

You can use the min wax sanding sealer to build up and fill pores if you like.

Hope this helped and I didn't just ramble on.

Please keep us posted on progress and ask questions if you like.
