Mike - the G4V site does give a link to Mr. Lewis for information about guitar donations. Try emailing again as they are normally good about responding to questions. They do have information on how to pack amd ship a guitar. I have used FedEx for shipping.

The classical could certainly be used as an art piece if it cannot be repaired. The good folks at G4V headquarters would check out any guitar you ship and would determine if it can be repaired or if it would be better used by Art Strings to make something creative to be sold or auctioned. We would be very happy to receive any or all of your guitars! The shipping can cost about $30, although may vary depending on where you reside.

Let me know if I can assist with contacting Mr. Lewis for you. Thank you for your generous offer, and most importantly, thank you for your service.

Mike - how can I best get in touch with you? Thank you for your kind offer. I don't know where you reside, and there may be a chapter that is closer to you. I am located in Richmond, VA. I have a repair tech who would be able to take a look and tell me if the guitars are able to be repaired.

I've been trying to contact G4V (Mr. Lewis, as the site directed me to) but so far have not gotten a response.

I have two guitars I'd like to donate, unfortunately they are not very
playable. The first is an old classical I have been playing but lately the
braces have become loose. The neck is good but the body has been glued in a
couple of spots ( that way when I got it around 30 years ago). Maybe this guitar
could be painted or otherwise decorated to be used as wall art and auctioned
off?

The other one is a guitar I bought for several hundred dollars, but I was
ripped off by the seller (by the way, I was ripped off by a service member -
it's only fitting that this guitar should go to G4V for some use). It was
advertised as a 1932 Gibson resonator. However, it is not a Gibson, though it is
circa 1932. It has two cracks running the length of the soundboard and the
resonator part is what I would describe as a "faux resonator." It is all
original, except maybe the tuners. It is not very playable (worn, original thin
frets, etc.). This would possibly be a great guitar to auction off. I wish I
knew someone who had a music store or a restaurant - this would make a fantastic wall display.

I'd be happy to send photos, if you would like. Could you use either one of
these? Both? If so, how do I get them to you?

I wish I could donate more, but I'm a disabled vet, retired, and living on
a very limited income. I get paid at the end of this month and that would be a
really good time for me to send these to you.

The lyrics are available in both versions in Closed Captioning. On the first version they are in the description area just below the video also. I could post them here if you'd like.

 

There are a few words that people just don't use anymore, but that's the way it came out. Some of it is based on the Gettysburg Address, some on classical mythology. I thought about some changes but it started to lose that old-timey, ethereal feel. So I just left it alone.

 

I noticed when we filmed the ceremony this year, the guns used in the salute ejected shells. In 1994, when I wrote most of the song in a restaurant across the street, the guns were much older and shot wadding all over the lawn. I did not change those lyrics either. Over 17 years one must expect some differences.

 

I did get some e-mails back from the Dodgeville vets. They appreciated our efforts. For those that don't have net access we're making some DVDs.

Yeah, I wonder what happened to him.  I keep hoping to run into him, but no luck so far.  As for the Taylor, I got a monel 310CE.  It's an acoustic electric, with the greatest sound that I've ever heard.  It was my divorce present to myself!!   LOL  It seems that everytime I go through a divorce, I buy a new guitar.  But I am through with those and I guess I'm through with my collection......
