How do you structure your practice to learn all the songs you want to learn?

I play classical/fingerstyle 6- & 12-string acoustic guitar pretty seriously. My goal eventually is to have about 40 songs at performance tempo (music of Leo Kottke, JS Bach, John Fahey, Ry…Continue

I find that I play fingerstyle guitar the best when I am sitting on mybed or on a couch. I've realized that having the bout of the guitar (Iplay the Leo Kottke signature model Taylor guitars- both…Continue

"Hi Ben I am not trying to be smart here, but you are Ben and not Kottke and while he may be able to play strings like that you may not be able to. And I am not sure that he really plays heavy guage strings like that either, you pretty well need…"

"Hey, The LKSM 12-string is specifically designed for .13-.56 and to be tuned 1 1/2 steps low. I believe they designed the bracing or whatever's of the guitar specifically for that purpose, to capture that trademark kottke rumble. It's a…"

"Okay I think you might have the wrong string set on your guitar ( http://www.taylorguitars.com/blog/taylor-support/faq-string-types-and-gauges ) if you see they recommend >010-.047 and also I would tune to a standard tuning instead of tuning…"

"If you read notation, I suggest you get a technique book (look in the Classical section) that you can work with that has barre exercises.  It's tedious, but persistence doing drills is the key. Getting a "GripMaster" squeeze…"

"Sounds like I am about your speed on the guitar and have been playing for a bit longer than you.  Owned a wonderful Takamine 12 string for about 30 years before I gave it away to a good home...  It was made in 1978 and I bought it used in…"

Struggling to play barre chords on the LKSM Taylor 12-string. Need advice

Hey folks,I am a moderately advanced fingerstyle guitarist (been playing 20 years and have about 20 John Stropes, Tab Pigs, and Mark Hanson transcriptions of Kottke, Cooder, Fahey, etc in my repertoire, and also play some Villa Lobos and Bach) and own both LKSM Taylor guitars. I am struggling to get barre chords to sound good on the 12 string. I have it setup as per Taylor's advice: I am tuning it 1 1/2 steps low with .13-.56 strings. In particular, I am unable to barre the thinner octave…See More

"I would never be critical of someone who is ambitious and sets the bar high, but I would merely suggest that maybe you are expecting too much of yourself.  I would question whether any of the professional artists you mentioned would have 40…"

"Your goal is similar to mine.  I'd consider myself a serious student fingerstylist.  I started playing about 3 years ago and try to squeeze as much playing as possible into each day and it is tough with a full time job.  I still…"

I play classical/fingerstyle 6- & 12-string acoustic guitar pretty seriously. My goal eventually is to have about 40 songs at performance tempo (music of Leo Kottke, JS Bach, John Fahey, Ry Cooder, Villa-Lobos, etc.). Some of the music, especially Kottke, Bach, and Villa Lobos, is pretty difficult (fast, intricate). Anyway, I am somewhere in the range of about 22 songs, at various stages of completion. Most I know by memory and can play within 75% of performance tempo. None of these are…See More
