jumbo-to-baritone conversion: string choices?

I've taken the leap. My Alvarez 5072 (circa mid-90's) is being turned into a "poor man's" baritone by the good people at Trade Up Music. For now they're assembling a "custom" set of strings from…Continue

The good news is that, thanks to an unplanned career change, I am  now traveling with my guitar quite a lot more than I used, and more than I expected I ever would. The not-so-good news is that I…Continue

jumbo-to-baritone conversion: string choices?

I've taken the leap. My Alvarez 5072 (circa mid-90's) is being turned into a "poor man's" baritone by the good people at Trade Up Music. For now they're assembling a "custom" set of strings from their odds and ends; this IS an experiment, after all. I already play 13's (flatpick) on my regular acoustic jumbo, and the next leap after that commercially seems to be the Elixir 16-70 gauge. I'm looking for something in between. I don't care if it's coated or just straight-up phosphor bronze. Is…See More

alvarez jumbo-to-baritone conversion?

Now that I own three Alvarez jumbos (an embarrassment of riches!), I'm considering converting one -- a mid-90's Model 5072 (above, at right) -- into a baritone. I figure that by adjusting the neck, swapping in a nut to handle the slightly thicker baritone strings, and tuning accordingly (down a 3rd or 4th) it could work.I love…See More

The good news is that, thanks to an unplanned career change, I am  now traveling with my guitar quite a lot more than I used, and more than I expected I ever would. The not-so-good news is that I cannot afford or justify a custom case for a guitar that only cost me $400; but I cannot afford to replace the guitar should something happen to it. I am very new to the Jewish music circuit and only have the gear I have for now. When I can, I try to travel by bus or train, as I and my guitar a re…See More

Product review -- Pickmaster: makes picks from old credit/debit cards

Anyone here used the Pickmaster? Makes standard-shaped guitar  picks from old credit/debit cards. I got one very cheap on discount and just tried it out -- and it works! A few tips:a. make sure you place the card in the cutter so that there are no gaps between the cutting edge and the shape of the pick you want. Don't try to squeeze an extra pick out of the card -- most cards are good for four to five at most.b. Once the card is where you want it in the cutter, squeeze the handles together…See More

Beth,

Thanks for taking the time to listen to and comment on "A Child's Eyes"-it is much appreciated. I agree that the Hatikvah quote  helped focus the song (and also knew you would recognize it, not everyone does). It is interesting because people on other sites have responded about some of the other atrocities you mentioned. It is unfortunate that situations like this ever existed and continue to exist.

Thanks Again,

Jeff

Beth,

I just finished listening to the songs you posted and I truly like all of them-Ma'oz Tsur brings back memories for sure and I also really liked your playing on Lamps of Peace (as well as the song).

There is a song on my home page here called "A Child's Eyes", it is near the end of the list of my songs-#24 I think. I wrote it several years ago. It is based on a true story told to me by a woman, who, as a child, watched her father being taken away by soldiers in WWII Germany. She survived the holocaust but never saw her father again. If you have a chance to listen to it I'd be curious to know what you think.
