I also read quite a bit that Dreads were a bit boomy and I figured that the MJ body shape lent itself to sound more balanced and yes, I find it great for fingerstyle work! I'd always been a strummer and still am but I really like the challenge and phraseing you get from a "hand picked" song. I use "You Tube" a lot and have found really good lessons and ideas from it, it helps immensely. I'm currently doing a lot of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young covers, both artists use regular and alternate tunings along with strumming/finger picking in the song so it's a fun and relatively easy mix!
If you are looking for a good tune that uses both strumming and finger picking in standard tuning look up Neil Young "Tell Me Why" on "You Tube" and you'll find a couple of lessons to choose from.

Tonally, how does your Dread compare to the MJ? My other guitar is a Simon and Patrick Folk which has a more compact sound to the MJ.
