Just thought I would drop in and make some noise. I went to folk music festival Friday and attended some workshops. One on better backup playing , one on Barr cords and one on dropped tunings. Now I know I will not remember it all but I feel I will st…
It may. My particular problem is mostly limited to singing over syncopated strums. The answer may be as simple as practicing the strum to the point where I'm not thinking about it. Your suggestion makes sense. I'll give it a try.

This is such a great topic Dan and one I have been really curious about. Young children don't seem to have a problem with this -- I'm talking very young. When I was 5, I used to walk to ukulele class. I would play and sing my songs while I was walki…
i like the playing in the closet idea, but since mine are full of stuff i'll have to do the eyes closed thing.
its funny i don't have a problem drumming and singing. but playing guitar and singing? my brain starts to implode. i have a hard enough t…
This is such a hard thing to learn...I love the "playing in the closet" idea, what a great way to look at it! I think for me I learn the song on the guitar as best I can so I don't have to consciously think about it, and then move on to learning the…
Hey Walt:
EXACTLY! I've never heard that comment from anyone, but it has to be a common problem. What, we don't have enough pixels to put the chords over all the lyrics? Then I have to spend my precious practice time cutting and pasting and typing…
I have no solution but do feel on some songs the voice is a separate instrument and you might as well be playing the guitar and a piano at the same time. I have moved those to the back of the book to try at a later date.
I have noticed that when I a…
Oh, and one more thing. Obviously, playing & singing at the same times requires that you play without looking at your hands, which is another skill that must be learned. A friend in my music circle who is an excellent guitar and mandolin player told…
Dan,
Great question! I have the same problem at this stage of my development, but I've certainly seen improvement. Most of the improvement has come from practicing with my weekly circle. When the others are playing, I feel less pressure to do thing…
On most songs, this is not a problem. However, certain songs seem impossible for me to keep the strum going while singing.
Along these lines, my two most difficult songs to play and sing are "Save the Last Dance For Me" and "Under the Boardwalk." D…
Indeed, the group likes fiddle tunes. Old Joe Clark is a good one. I like songs with lyrics because I like to sing.
We missed this week, but we will get back to it Monday.
Dan
Good idea Dan, Golden Slippers is also a good tune. Sounds like someone in your group likes the fiddle tunes:-) Try Old Joe Clark some time its fun to play also .
Don
Dan,
I would like a little more information including maybe where the group would meet. I like to play with other people but I'm not interested in playing in public any more. Age is catching up with me and I have been spending a lot of time learning to play the banjo. Please don't laugh! Looking forward to your reply and thanks for the invite. I know some other players that might be interested but they are not a member of the acoustic guitar club.
Hi Dan,
Great to meet you here! How close are you to the martin Factory?

Clapton and Taylor are amazing. Jack Johnosn and Ben harper have some pretty fun songs. My mom is the biggest fan of taylor and for her birthday (mid June) I want to be able to play fire and rain by JT for her, but I'm struggling BIG TIME. I am having trouble with the tab. Any suggestions?
