Ed Rhoades replied to Mark Kennedy's discussion Martin strings-is there a difference? in the group Martin Owners
"On some of my guitars, which strings I use makes a huge difference...on others...I can't see any change. I'm one of those players who doesn't prefer the bright metallic sound of new strings. I like them broken in a little. Recently,…"

Ed Rhoades replied to Jud Hair's discussion An "inside look" at Martin HPL in the group Martin Owners
"To me, the inside of a Martin X guitar smells like citrus. It is made up of 60 % wood fiber and 40% resins with a photograph finish. The two X models in our home have solid tops, however the X models also differ in the bracing system. The A frame X…"

Ed Rhoades replied to CaliGull's discussion Thinking of getting a 000-15M in the group Martin Owners
"I have a D-15M and I've been admiring a 000-15M on the wall of our music store. If your 000-15 was a few years ago, it's likely it was mahogany not sapele....which would be close to the new 000-15M.  The smaller body Gibson is pretty…"

"Lately, I've been using Martin light gauge strings on my HD28, my SWDGT, my DC1E and my D15M. After so long, I've gotten used to them. Mediums make my hands tired after two sets, and I sometimes bend all the strings. I have the action set…"

"I use lights...and sometimes custom lights on all my dreadnoughts including my D16RGT.  I really don't believe I'm sacrificing much volume or tone.  Some country and bluegrass guys scoff a the idea, but I play a lot of blues and…"

Ed Rhoades replied to Jud Hair's discussion Martin MMV models ... in the group Martin Owners
"Where did you get the specs?  Since it's a custom guitar made for Musicians Friends and GC, it's not listed on the Martin site. I'm surprised if it's full gloss at that price. The 28 series has hand sanded braces, and a…"

Martin Repair

Three weeks ago, I took my one year old D16RGT to the Martin factory. It had settled to the point where the action was high and the saddle had been taken down as far as possible.

Lon, the friendly, knowledgeable head of repairs, put on a lower bridge. He had previously changed the nut, but this time he also changed the saddle. Now the only micarta is the fingerboard...which feels great. They also buffed out some minor scratches on the top...and the guitar sounds amazing. It was all… Continue

Drivin

My wife and I have been practicing for a blues competition this Sunday.
I recorded tonight's practice on a small hand held recorder. It features an original song, with a standard blues intro. My wife is playing acoustic bass, and I'm playing a Martin DCX1E. She's singing the lead while playing bass.
It's all one shot...no overdubs, but you can get a sense or what we're doing. Later, I hope to make a studio recording of the same song.

Hello, A volume petal? That may work well for me.

Thanks for the comment on the pickup. I was thinking of getting a sound hole type. Volume control is something I didn't think of, but need and use with other guitar.

Thanks for the add. I only have one Martin a D16T. I love it and can't believe how good it sounds on recordings.

Thank you Ed for your comments about home recording. I record my raw demos using Cake Walk with my computer, it's good enough to give to the artist recording my songs. It gives my publisher an idea of how I heard the song in my head, they then arrange and record it for me.

Your message:
Looks like a wonderful guitar. I played a pre war D 45 once that belonged to David Bromberg when it was in a shop for repairs in Philadelphia. It's been decades, but I still remember the tone.

Are you going to Nazfest or Maxfest?

It was a special guitar, made to honor the original CF and put in the original Martin Family home along with tools and his original workbench, which was a site to behold itself! All of this "stuff" is now located in the Museum.

I am not familier with Maxfest, but I have heard of Nazfest. Never been to either. Please provide me with the dates and I'll see if I am not booked anywhere. Can't do family trips during the week, and weekends are often booked, so it makes it hard. I hate it when someone says "Hey, I am playing at so and so, come out and see me" and invaribly I will be booked the same night...then again, can't complain! I do have more control now than I have ever had because I (or one of the trio) do all of our booking now. I went the agent route for years and you have to turn your life over to them...and they don't like to hear that you are busy or going to be busy! But then you can't blame them, that's how they make their buck! I have also had too many friends screwed by agents too, skimming off the profits...but that's like saying that all car dealers are bad! Anyway, give me some dates and I'll see what I am able to do. Also, do you ever go to the Philly Vintage Guiutar show? It is twice a year just outside of Philly and I am due for a treat like that this year! Here is a link: http://www.bee3vintage.com/
Don't know if I can get to the summer one, but really hope to do the one in November. Thanks, Edward
