Jason Tryon replied to John J. Cebula's discussion Taylor T5 in the group Fingerstyle Jazz
"Just a fwiw sort of thing. I play smooth wound 11's on my archtop and for jazz and jazzy blues (Like "G Blues" by Joe Pass and Herb Ellis) it plays very very well with warm liquid tones."

Jason Tryon replied to Steve Cartwright's discussion Looking for direction in the group Fingerstyle players
"I just see a lot of teachers and a lot of students who spend all their time mimicking another player by learning tabs of songs without really understanding what they're playing and that's limiting in a number of ways. 1. It means they…"

Jason Tryon replied to Steve Cartwright's discussion Looking for direction in the group Fingerstyle players
"I'm afraid I can't agree with you altogether here Ernesto. Yes it's a good idea to spend time learning songs that you like and want to play, and having fun with it is a must. At that point we digress. Music theory and the technical…"

Jason Tryon replied to Donna Zitzelberger's discussion Acoustic Guitar Amplifiers in the group Fingerstyle players
"I'm very glad you found something that suits you. I hope it does exactly what you need it to do. Just an addendum. The cube 80 has an acoustic setting that for my purposes (caveat coming) serves very well. That said (here it comes) the kind of…"

Jason Tryon commented on bottleneck_blues's group Delta Blues
"David, You might try Pandora Radio if what you're after is music to listen to. And about finger picks. No idea, I've been trying for years and still haven't managed it. Jason"

Jason Tryon replied to SteveO Mallis's discussion Edgey Lyrics in the group Songwriters
"What I would consider edgy and what someone else might consider edgy are likely wildly different things. Taking the provided example (Lady Gaga) when she talks about love it's most always in a sexual context. She talks about topics that are a…"

Jason Tryon replied to Donna Zitzelberger's discussion Acoustic Guitar Amplifiers in the group Fingerstyle players
"If you could or wanted to part with just a tiny bit more money $300 - $400, Roland makes a series of amplifiers the Cube(n), where (n) is the wattage of the amplifier. (ie Roland Cube30 for 30 watts, etc.) Solid state modeling amplifier with…"

Jason Tryon replied to SteveO Mallis's discussion Edgey Lyrics in the group Songwriters
"Let me start by saying I am terrible at lyrics. My poetry all sounds trite and contrived to me. That said, my best recommendation is not to try to write "edgy" lyrics. Write what's in your head screaming to get out. That's not to…"

Jason Tryon replied to ladyarb's discussion guitars for lady beginner
"I play an Epiphone Regent Joe Pass Custom archtop, It is quite simply dollar for dollar the very best archtop guitar made on the planet. Sure you can spend $10K for a Lee Rittenour signature Gibson but unless you're making a living with the…"

Jason Tryon replied to kevin's discussion Keb Mo, 'it hurts me too' in the group Delta Blues
"I think, now I could be wrong but where I would start is standard tuning in E. One of the things that makes it a little hard to hear is that he's playing a resonator. Nothing wrong with that, just a little different sound than a…"

Jason Tryon replied to Charles Long's discussion High end guitars
"That's hard to define. High end is generally used to refer to a certain caliber of instrument, and most people think in terms of Taylor, Martin or Gibson or that ilk when talking about high end instruments. Most every manufacturer makes what…"

Jason Tryon replied to Michael S. Jackson's discussion So... What Goes First?
"I had to break myself of the habit of wanting to play all six strings on chords. It was somewhat of a trick. J."

Jason Tryon replied to Charles Long's discussion High end guitars
"The only thing I would add to what has already been said is this, if you are going to buy off of ebay, or buy from an online seller (Musician's Friend for example) find someone a shop somewhere that has one of the instrument you're…"

Jason Tryon replied to Michael S. Jackson's discussion So... What Goes First?
"If barre chords are giving your hands pain, drop out some of the notes and only play the essential notes of the chord. It's not written anywhere that you have to hit all six strings every time. J."

Jason Tryon replied to Charles Long's discussion High end guitars
"I have a practice (which I admit is somewhat snobbish) that I do not generally buy from a store that does not keep reasonably fresh strings on their instruments. By reasonably fresh I mean not tarnished and dirty. If I pick up an instrument and do a…"

Jason Tryon replied to Bob Newby's discussion Luthier Built -- Connecting artists and artisans in the group Fingerstyle players
"Joseph, What part of TN is Fairfield Glade in? I live in North Alabama, and would be interested in making a trip to see your shop if you wouldn't mind. J."

Ok here is the process by which I modify a thumb pick to have a profile that suits my playing better. The problem is that the standard thumb pick profile moves my hand an extra 1/4-3/8" away from the strings. For me this makes thumb picks a real problem.

This modification requires very expensive hard to find specialized guitar picks. A flat pick of your own that you like, and a thumb pick that feels comfortable to wear but has a point that is too long. Total outlay in parts about… Continue
