Who uses capoes?

Jan, Keyser has a great site for this at http://www.kysermusical.com/shortcut/. Obviously designed to sell their capos, it's still a great resource. I've put together a short booklet called "capo ma…

Differences between Martin HD-28 and Standard D-28

Ken, In addition to the differences Jim mentions, there are two structural differences which are said to affect tone. The HD-28 uses what Martin calls "forward-shifted" bracing; that is, the X-brace…

Who uses capoes?

Jan, I've used partial capos for 20 years or more, and they've become rather central to my playing style and what little writing I still do. Partial capos allow chord voicings that you simply cannot…

Forrest, Martin has just released a short-scale (24.9 inches - same as a 000) D-18V, and it may be just the thing for you. String spacing is still on the narrow side, but I've played a couple of hours of fingerstyle on one at the local music store.…

My preference is payment by credit card (I have a merchant account for CD sales), but also accept a check, usually for up to four lessons at a time, sent to me before lessons begin. It's not generally something I like to deal with during a lesson. I…

I have a question on how Skype-based teachers collect for their lessons? Do they have the student pay via PayPal when scheduling the lesson? Is there a reliable way to schedule via a web site so you can automate that process? I can see where hasslin…

Thanks, Jerry--this sounds pretty interesting.

In the course of my day job work, I came across a company that is about to launch a new web service specifically designed for teaching dynamic events like musical performance over the web. The idea is that you make a video of your performance, uploa…

I agree with the general sentiments expressed here. Skype is not exactly like a live lesson, but it's a whole lot better than no lesson at all. It is certainly not the best forum for working on tone, but lots of other work can get done quite gracefu…

Here's a group we started on this site with some cool information in it: Online Webcam Students and Teachers. I tried to sum my thoughts up in this blog: Benefits and Limitations of Webcam Guitar Lessons I hope that helps. I'm happy to answer any…

Hi Jerry. I've been using Skype/webcam to teach. I have a number of students from back east that still wish to study with me; it is also a way to offer occasional lessons to people I meet on tour or at my workshops. Optimal? No, but the technology h…

Look for Rob Bourassa, he does some teching by Skype I believe. From what I've seen of Skype, the picture quality really bothers my eyes. I'm terribly far-sighted and have trouble with shaky, moving and indistinct images. It wouldn't be for me, but…

Jerry Bresee added a discussion to the group Teachers
Hi everyone,I noticed Stevie Coyle's comment about teaching via Skype.  I'd really like to hear more about that - how well it works, how well students like it, etc.  Are there any other "distance" teaching tools that people use?

Hi Jerry! Thanks for the kind words. I miss VA sometimes, but Boulder is a wonderful place to be a musician. So many great players from so many genres and backgrounds. I still get back east though--I'll be on tour there this summer as well as teaching a 2-week workshop. Do you ever get out to CO? It would be great to see/hear you again. Take care, Michael
