Going down in defeat?

So my efforts to start a guitar club took a quick nose dive. I have been unable to find any place where such a group could meet without paying. To collect dues would mean incorporating as a non-profit under state law, and then there are loads of fees and paperwork with IRS, attorney-general, secretary of state, etc.

Best idea was to collect $$ each night and use that to offset the rent. Pretty unreliable, but it might work.

My thought at the moment is to reconnect with the… Continue

Guitar Clubs

I've been thinking of approaching either my local library or my local park district to see if they'd let me have space to start a "guitar club." Does anyone have any experience and advice about this sort of endeavor?

What I envision is a place where people can get together every other week for a couple of hours in the evening to play for and with each other, and to teach and critique each other. I'm not really interested in creating a situation where someone can show off his or her… Continue

I have a Micheal Kelly Dragonfly F style mando that sounds pretty good and has a pickup for playing live. I've heard good things about Eastman and Kentucky. You can get a pretty good starter mandolin for under $1000. I'd try to stay with a carved top and solid woods.

Hi John , it is sort of unrelated to guitar in a way. How I found the group was through a ham radio operator friend of mine that happens to also play guitar. He told me about it at a ham radio meeting we were at. I told him I did not play well and he just said come to one of the jams and bring my guitar. You can look for jams in your area by searching for bluegrass jams in your area or you could also try folk music circles or jams . Hope this helps you out.

HI John I have a friend that works for Washburn Nick Ellingsworth( Production Manager ), give him a call and ask him if it's possible for you to do a tour of their custom shop (847-949-0444 ) and tell him the Ship of Fools suggested it and you can see what they are making these days, hope this helps you out deciding .Ship
