I am not a blue-blood southern girl since I grew up in Chicago, then lived in the Detroit area for 11 years! I've been in VA for 21 years now, so I've acquired a love of the south. My Irish roots include years of listening to Irish songs - not just on St. Paddy's Day - and Bluegrass music derives from the older Irish reels and ballads. I also enjoy blues and jazz and often attended the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Detroit when I lived there.

- Hi Mike! I'm a newbie, too. At least you have some time on the mandolin and banjo! I've been working with a terrific teacher since Sept. He used to play with Phish. I'm learning finger style and am having fun, although those early weeks of building calouses on my finger tips were interesting. Much better now.
