Alvarez 5090 Fusion Pro - Questions

Does anyone have any information on this guitar? It's black with no sound hole ( I believe they came in White and Blue as well). I saw some press years ago for Luka Bloom, then again for Thom Yorke of Radiohead, who both used them - they might have been DY88's. I bought one on Ebay last week for 375$ - waiting for it to arrive. I have a comprehensive collection of acoustic guitars - Gibson's, Martins etc, but have always had a fascination with either solid body acoustics or hybrids made for…See More

Tracy Clark replied to Patrick Corbett's discussion Tuning down a step in the group 12-String Guitar
"I just got a 12 string and keep it tuned down a 1/2 step and it plays and sounds great. If I need to play in standard tuning I just capo at the 1st fret. I will use your idea using a secondary capo since I also have both a Shubb and Kyser one."

"I tried a Seagull Coastline Cedar 12 on the weekend - it's not really a short scale - 24.8 rather than 25. The guy at the Music store said they don't make anything shorter than that. I'm going to stay with the stepped down Tak."

"I looked at the Seagull Coastline Cedar - that looks about perfect - are there any other folks who make 12 string short scale's."

Patrick Corbett replied to Patrick Corbett's discussion Tuning down a step in the group 12-String Guitar
"My Takamine says the fretboard is 25.5", yet shortening the neck by 2 frets at the nut would be 2 3/4 " less real estate. I rarely play above the 8th fret, have slender hands so the lack of space wouldn't be an issue. I'm going…"

"The Seagull Coastline Cedar 12 is a short scale (24.84 inch) dreadnought size 12-string.  It's a fantastic bargain for around $500+/- !!"

Tuning down a step

I have a Takamine Ef341SC (my fourth 12 string over the years) and for the first time I tuned it all down a step to try and ease the action and to not encourage a slight bridge lift before I get it properly fixed (on some advice on this forum) - Previously the action was really nice, low, no buzzing, but I wanted to ease the tension a bit. At the Music store I was buying some lighter gauge Elixers (10's). The guy at the counter suggested taking it down. I didn't end up replacing the strings. It…See More

Patrick Corbett replied to Patrick Corbett's discussion Guild D 125 12 - had anyone tried one? in the group 12-String Guitar
"Beautiful. My Guild has an Arched back - the new D125's don't, but the inlay work is incredible....I'm currently hovering over the 'Buy it Now' on Ebay ;) - I'll be the laughing stock of my band as they Keyboard player…"

Edward Sparks replied to Patrick Corbett's discussion Guild D 125 12 - had anyone tried one? in the group 12-String Guitar
"I am an all time fan of Guild 12 strings, I own a 1980 JF212XL, and I tried out an Asian-made GAD JF130-12 string and it was incredible! And this was Pre-Fender buyout too.  I have never heard of the D125 12 at all...thanks for the heads…"

Guild D 125 12 - had anyone tried one?

I have  - yesterday, and was blown away. I don't usually bother with the Chinese guitars when tinkering in a store (Steve's in Toronto), but I have a 1975 D125 M that I love so I gave it a try. It had incredible action and a HUGE sound, sparkling and deep. the weirdest part it was (without pickup) $629.00 at the store. (Steve's isn't the 'go to' place for acoustic guitars in Toronto - but next door). On Ebay you can find several for $578.The guy in the store said since Guild is now owned by…See More

Patrick Corbett replied to Hjalti Geir Pétursson's discussion Swollen behind the bridge in the group 12-String Guitar
"My Takamine ef341sc 12 is doing the same thing - to a lesser degree, with the bridge doing a slight rise off the body (enough to fit the tip of a Medium pick underneath). The action is still good an low with no string buzz. Is this something…"

Songer Songwriter - Very simple home and live amplification set up

HiI've put together a really simple Singer Songwriter set up for live playing (small clubs - house concerts) that really works, also for playing home with headphones. With the risk of sounding a little geeky...Nothing is required from the sound man (if there is one) except one Mic cable not even a DI. I also use this  with my band as they keyboard player who plays acoustic and sings a few songs. With the exception of the Mic stand (and, of course, a guitar) the whole thing fits in a drummers…See More

Antonio Cotichini replied to Patrick Corbett's discussion Question about a truss rod adjustment (flattening the neck) on a Takamine 12 in the group 12-String Guitar
"I know that Taylors are among the best built 12 strings as Guilds and Martins too... but also the most sexy pin-up girl is subject to grow old... and maybe when she'll arrive arond 70... she'll need some make-up to look still nice!…"
