Any sort of light gauge acoustic guitar string would be fine. You could also try the coated strings, which last longer. I like Diadarrio Phospher Bronzes

I think everyone coming in with a tune or two they can play helps alot. That way you avoid sitting around with everyone asking "What should we play?" Other than that i think keeping it low key and fun, no egos, and a supportive environment are good.
