Ron Murray replied to Tom H's discussion Need a good (non-permanent) pickup
"No, just loosen the strings, pull up the saddle, and slide the pickup out. I do it all the time, on both 6 and 7-string guitars, including my very expensive Lester Devoe flamenco models. It's a 10-minute job at most."

Ron Murray replied to Tom H's discussion Need a good (non-permanent) pickup
"Shadow makes a nanoflex model that installs under the saddle, very easy, no drilling, sounds very good. Has a built-in vol control and preamp as well."

Travelin' Light Concert Jan. 7 2012

My duo will be opening for nouveau banjo whiz Jayme Stone on Saturday, January 7 at Lily Pads in PeaceDale RI. 7:30 start. Travelin' Light is Robert Malin on percussion (cajon, conga, shakers) and me on 7-string guitar (nylon strings) and vocals, doing a mix of Brazilian, Spanish and jazz/pop arrangements and originals. If you're in South County or southeastern Connecticut, it's an easy ride for a night of genre-busting acoustic music.See More

Ron Murray replied to Mark's discussion Looping stations
"I just bought the Digitech JamMan Loop Station, for less than $200, good machine, nice sounds, easy to use."

Ron Murray replied to bruce wilson's discussion Do you use a pick?
"While I mostly play classical-style, on electric guitar for jazz and rock I like the flat pick. I use different gauges for different purposes: heavier for a fat tone for playing single-note lines, lighter for strumming passages. Jim Hall does a…"

Ron Murray replied to Richard OReilly's discussion Backing track tools for gigs
"I make my own in either Protools or Logic. Macs come with garageband, lots and lots of cool loops, easy to manipulate.   Tracks in a looper can go into the memory card, you just need a list of tunes and their related numbers; my Digitech…"

Ron Murray replied to Curtis's discussion nylon string... internal mic / pickup
"Also, the Shadow Nanoflex undersaddle pickup is removable and involves no drilling, and works especially well on nylon-string guitars. For mics, Audio-Technica makes a mini-condensor with a padded clip, again, no drilling whatsoever."

Milos performs "Prelude Number One" by Heitor Villa Lobos.mp4

"Nice playing, clean, good tone, but he is distorting the rhythms quite a bit in the accompanying chords."

Ron Murray replied to Richard Kordel's discussion Searching for Sheet Music: John Duarte/Sharon Isbin
"Generally, guitarists are very sociable and not too difficult to reach. One should not hesitate to reach out to a famous guitarist for answers. For years, I made it a point to schedule private lessons with traveling musicians who came to my…"

Ron Murray replied to Richard Burridge's discussion A Whiter Shade of Pale
"Nice work, David. I like "How Deep Is Your Love" as well, I'm going to use your version as an inspiration for a bossa version with a soft. Gilberto-like vocal. You have a nice sound and a relaxed and patient style, very enjoyable."

"Have you tried to reach Sharon Isbin? I'm sure she would be able to source the Suite for you."

Ron Murray replied to Pascal Proust's discussion Universal Mike
"There are hundreds of mics available. A small-diaghram condenser that takes a battery is probably your best bet for the purposes you're describing."

Ron Murray replied to Pascal Proust's discussion Portable digital recorder

Ron Murray replied to Gerimaya Whyte's discussion Gigging in coffeehouses/restaurants
"Bose L! Compact solves the sound problem. Bad audiences are more difficult; sometimes it's better to get softer and make them lean in to hear, sometimes you just can't do anything and just have to finish the gig and chalk it up to paid…"
