Swing Blues Lead Lesson

Learn to play the blues like early swing and jazz guitar soloists Lonnie Johnson and Charlie Christian.

Considering the number of rock guitar heroes who’ve made their names playing blues and blues-influenced music, it should come as no surprise that lead guitarists have been playing the blues ever since they starting taking solos in a band. Lonnie Johnson’s solo on Louis Armstrong’s 1927 recording of “Savoy Blues” is one of the earliest instances of a blues guitar solo in an… Continue

Peter Mulvey’s "The Long Haul Tour”

Milwaukee-based, internationally-touring singer-songwriter Peter Mulvey is in the middle of his third annual bike/concert tour. The Long Haul Tour began September 9 with a ferry ride from Milwaukee to Muskegon, MI, where Peter took to his recumbent bike rigged with guitar and travel necessities and pedaled to Grand Rapids for the tour’s kick-off show. From there it was on to three more Michigan shows, and due east for three shows in New York state, and another three in Massachusetts—with daily… Continue

Mike Seeger and the Strange Creek Singers

There have been many tributes to Mike Seeger since he passed away last month at the age of 75, but I thought I would add a personal one. Seeger and his music came into my life at an impressionable time—my first year of college and my first year of seriously trying to learn to play the guitar—1974. I had come under the sway of Doc Watson and Clarence White and the progressive bluegrass scene of the early ’70s but old-time music would end up having as much of an influence on me as anything, and I… Continue

The Essential Clarence White

When I was in Nashville a couple weeks ago for the NAMM show, I visited some local guitar shops, including Guitar Gallery, the Opryland Gibson Guitar showcase, Gruhn Guitars, and Cotten Music, where I made my only musical purchase of the week: Roland White and Diane Bouska’s wonderful new book The Essential Clarence White: Bluegrass Guitar Leads. In addition to an illuminating biographical intro by Roland that details his life with his brother from their births in rural Maine to… Continue

Thanks for the note, Scott. It's kind of funny to me, how we have all sort of abandoned the old haunt for these plush new gigs, but now no one is talking to each other.

It's like before, we lived in the tenements and everyone was sitting on the stoop out in front of their building, and we would just hang pit and play handball and sing doo-wop, and now we live in a gated community and wave at each other as we drive past in our comfortable sedans.

But I am sure it will work out in the long run. What was the envisioned mission for the new place, as opposed to the old, if you have any insights?

Scott,
If you're at the Winter NAMM Show in January, please stop by the Kyser Capo booth. We are releasing the new K-Lever series of Partial Capos. Drop D, Double Drop D, DADGAD, and Open G, and all four feature the K-Lever. Some of your guys have seen the prototypes at the last couple shows and seemed to like them quite well. I would love to meet you and give you a set of them.
Hope to see you in Jan.

I left a comment for you I think on the group page this is the longest I have ever spent on a computer so I am not proficient as a keyboard input technician so thanks for the reply I think I need to get my son to help me do some you tube stuff and while I am at it he should join this bunch he is left handed and a better player than I will ever be my father was left handed as well just turned the guitar upside down my son however had the benefit of a father who would buy him left handed guitars and now he has nicer guitars than I do which I cant play as I am right handed however he went to an audition for a show and they insisted he play the show guitar so he just turned it upside down and read thru it I say its genetic best regards if you make it to florida I will be happy to tour you around the Kennedy Space Center where I also work and DISNEY I am one lucky Musician/Plectrum ologist technician
