"Actually, Todd, the correct term, for my instrument at least, is probably octave mandolin. It is tuned an octave below a standard or soprano mandolin, just like the name implies. The scale length on mine is 22.25" which is perfect for that body…"

"Hi Jon,   Thanks for your kind words about my instruments.   Yes, ash back and sides on that instrument, which I call a zoukulele.  Though it looks like a mando, it's tuned like a tenor uke: GCEA (low to high).   I've…"

"Also, Todd, Is that a bouzouki? For years I've thought about building one. What is the scale length on yours? I've also never seen a pair of strings held by one bridge pin. Interesting! Thanks! Jon"

Very nice, affordable inn in Hollywood - for Newport show

If you haven't yet settled your accommodations for the Newport show, there's a very nice inn right on the beach that's owned by a friend of a friend of mine.  It would be a big step up from your run-of-the-mill hotel down there, and it's not much more expensive than the budget places.  I think you'd be quite pleased.  They tell me it's about 15 minutes drive to the show (it's quite close, but with traffic and all, y'know).  I was going to stay there, and then I got an offer from a friend to…See More

"Thanks for the scale and string info, Edward. I like the inlays on the 12 string. I'm a hawk guy - that is to say (at the risk of being ostracized for being seen as "new age") hawks and eagles are totem animals for me."

The scale length on mine is 22.25" which is perfect for that body size, in my opinion. You don't see many octave mandos in groups, however. Their range is about where the guitar is and I think it would get lost in there. Oh, by the way, I watched the video of Tony Dune playing the guitar/bouzouki. Sounds and looks great! Jon

Hello, Todd! My name is Jon Allred and I, too, am an instrument builder. I enjoyed the photos on your website. You have some fine looking instruments and some interesting ideas in your construction methods. I love your alto mando. Are the back and sides ash? I made a couple about five years ago and I love mine. One is a 9-string hybrid and one is a true alto mando. I'd love to talk shop sometime. Regards, Jon
