LaBella Argento strings

Strings are strings, right?  After spending an entire year having fun trying different brands, styles and tensions when I first bought my guitar, I settled on good old D'Addario or, sometimes, Savarez Corum/Alliance.  Well, I splurged on a set of LaBella Argento (silver-plated) strings for my upcoming recital.  I'm hooked.  They're the best strings (at least for this guitar) that I've ever heard.  The basses on my Kenny HIll double-top are very powerful and they often overwhelm.  But, the… Continue

The Power of Music

About a month ago I performed my latest composition in an Easter service.  I started the project this last winter and was trying to depict an accurate story of Jesus' life through instrumental guitar and a slideshow presentation that included images and scripture.  As I worked on the piece, the meaning of Jesus' life, death, and coming back to life took on a whole new depth for me.  The piece became so powerful that it was difficult to practice.  The music would take my mind to such new and…

2011 National Thumbpicking Champion Crowned

I made my annual trek to the National Thumbpicking Championship on May 13 & 14, 2011 at the Ozark Folk Center’s Tribute to Merle Travis Festival in Mountain View, AR.  The approximately 2300 resident town of Mountain View sits atop an Ozark mountain and hosts musicians from all over the area who…

Independent Musicians turning away from YouTube?

YouTube is a platform for independent musicians that provides worldwide exposure. Basically you upload a song and it is playing 24/7 for whoever in the world wants to watch it. In the beginning (before Google bought it) YouTube was of course smaller and there was a great response to uploads and a great sense of community and friendship there. YouTube has been mainstream for some time now and while I still have old friends from back when we started on YT the feeling amongst them is that more…

Crack Cookies.

Tuesday is my longest work day of the week starting at 9 AM when I leave the house, wrapping up whenever everything's done. This involves 3 hours on the subway, and about an hour of walking.

Fun part #1 is the teaching - 1 general music class with the little ones at Montessori plus 4 piano lessons at Monte. I'm teaching them about Tchaikowski, and we're listening to the 1812 Overture. They go nuts every time they hear the cannons. The little little ones (2.5 - 4) rock out…

Sacramento Guitar Societies Roundtable Report

Earlier this month, on April 16th, I attended the first West Coast Guitar Societies Roundtable event. Organized by the Sacramento Guitar Society, the event was held in Sacramento, California. Among the goals for the event was to find ways for regional guitar societies to collaborate, and as such, several discussions and lectures addressed this topic. In addition to sessions given by the Austin, Texas, Guitar Society’s Dr. Matthew Hinsley, David Lusterman, publisher of Acoustic… Continue

On The Origin Of Flight

i remember, once, i couldn't walk

sure, i could move by myself

but i couldn't walk

perhaps, i didn't feel the need to

possibly, i was happy crawling on hands and knees

yet, i could see

and from what i could see, others were walking

obviously, they had stood up, and they were walking

and i was not, but hey, i was happy crawling

and then one day, i don't remember why

i tried to stand up, but i couldn't and fell down

and so i kept… Continue

Architects Of Progress

it was a path, a road, a way forward

it was not just any other day

yet, in a sense, it could have been

had it been the unusual sunshine

the melodies of the birds

or something in the air

lures material

she now knew empty

she had chosen progress

it had become possible

it was a number, a goal, an ideal

it was not just any other whim

yet, in a sense, how could it be otherwise ?

had it been the many… Continue

Uncoiling I

apparently finite

yet in eternity

there is no part of you

that is not part of me

our worlds colliding

it's not you i'm seeing

but how you're reflecting

in my understanding

as your view touches mine

asking me to decide

between growth and decline

this is no time to hide

though my blood is boiling

i am not unknowing

it's only the prompting

of the future knocking

forcing me into place

the… Continue
