Life's Lessons and My Lucky Strike

Sorry to make this my first post and a long one at that but I just got my membership approved in this community and this just happened to me last night.

Last night I was changing strings on my new guitar which I bought just a month ago.  It is a Lowden Lucky Strike, #4 in a series of 10.  The guitar was special to me for many reasons - 40 year old reclaimed Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Mahogany neck made from reclaimed church pews and a flawless, perfectly grained…

new guitar

I'm not sure how this whole blog thing works, but it sounds like a diary that everyone can read.  I've been playing a Seagull M12 for about 6 months and just bought a new Seagull 25th Aniversary Model Mahogany/Spruce.  I couldn't be happier.  I have been chastized by my good friend John from Colorado as he says I should buy a Martin.  Well the Seagull company makes a guitar that sounds to me just as nice and it is a whole lot less money.  Besides, I really like the 1.8" neck width for my long… Continue

New discovery!

This isn't really about acoustic guitars, but here goes. I've been on a kick lately where I think I want to get a new amp. I have a great little Marshall MG15DFX. Sounds good. But I've been obsessed with getting a small tube amp. It's really ridiculous since I just bought a new Taylor DN3. It's my new favorite. Most expensive guitar I've owned. I have found that sometimes, I just open the case to look at it. Crazy! I know. But I started thinking about this amp thing right before I bought the… Continue

Level up!

That's it! I finally gone a step forward in my guitar studies, whatever the style, and thanks to my (hard) work on classical guitar pieces. On Friday, my guitar teacher and I met up after 5 weeks off. Before going away on vacation, he let me free to keep working on whatever I wanted, and just told me to work a little on flamenco improvisation, but…

Steve Earle at the Uptown Theater in KCMO

Met Steve Earle after the show at the Uptown. What a thrill to shake hands and talk with him for a bit. The show was excellent, what great band he's put together for this tour!

Bunkfest 2011 Songwriting Workshop (Writers in the Round)

"Michael McCarthy" goes to Bunkfest.

This was my contribution to "Writers in the Round" at Bunkfest 2011. Bunkfest is a music festival in Wallingford, England. This was a great experience. It is such a good way to showcase songs in a very relaxed atmosphere. Click on Michael McCarthy to open the link.

I am new to the site, so go easy on me.  I have played guitar for about 45 years and mandolin for about 10 years.  I grew up in Louisiana and Texas during the 50's through the 70's playing country music and bluegrass.  The Louisiana Hayride would come through town and our family band would get up and play for folks. Lots of fun.  I have since played for a Catholic Church for about 9 years playing the "guitar Mass".  Now I just practice all the songs I know in prep for hopefully…

Vincente Barajas M. Classical Guitar

I am selling a Vincente Barajas M. Classical Guitar and I just want to say that it is a fine instrument, very easy to play. I kind of do a lot of Carlos Montoya style left handed hammer ons and pull offs very easily with this particular guitar. Everyone that plays it comments on the tone. I really didn't want to sell it but due to current circumstances it looks like I'll have to part with it. It's a cedar top with a rosewood fretboard. It's made with the traditional quality you would naturally… Continue
