Calexico, Carried to Dust

Over the years I’ve seen the name Calexico dropped in various magazines (see our June 2006 issue) and on music fan sites, but for some reason this band always fell into the “I should really check them out one day” category, which can be a little like “I should write the Great American Novel” or “I need to visit Tuscany one day.” That said, my introduction to Calexico’s cinematic sound—which incorporates everything from mariachi horns to spaghetti Western strings and snaking guitar… Continue

Players who build guitars

We're working on an upcoming feature for Acoustic Guitar that will take a look at several guitarists who also channel their passion for guitar into building instruments. We'll focus on songwriting legend Guy Clark, old-time picker Wayne Henderson, The Duhks guitarist Jordan McConnell, fingerstyle innovator Peter Finger, and The Waifs guitarist Joshua Cunningham. It's an impressive group of players, and they all have interesting stories about their love for building guitars.

Together Again

Nope, I’m not talking about the timeless Buck Owens’ song. There was a time in the mid-‘90s when a pair of records by the classic alt.country band the Jayhawks kept me steady company at the small-town record store I worked at (there actually wasn’t much work to be had there, so mainly I listened to records, drank coffee, and stared at the college kids playing hacky sack outside). My constant spinning of Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow the Green Grass probably drove my coworkers… Continue

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival

I had a great time playing at last weekend’s free bluegrass (and beyond) megafest in Golden Gate Park, the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. This year I was playing with the Bill Evans String Summit, which included Bill on banjo, Megan Lynch and Alex Hargreaves on fiddles, Steve Smith on mandolin, Bill Amatneek on bass, and yours truly on guitar. I’ve been amazed at the quality of the sound at this festival, which has three huge stages and a couple of medium-size stages, including the Porch… Continue

Dylan the Younger

All cheeky allusions to ancient Roman thinkers aside, I find myself returning more and more to Jakob Dylan’s latest album, Seeing Things, a spare and delicate acoustic record that finds the son of a famous songwriter we all know well getting hushed and intimate. Gone is the sheen of adult contemporary pop with alt-country touches, which had led Dylan into a creative cul-de-sac—some would say torpor. Produced by Rick Rubin (see my previous blog about Rubin’s upcoming work with the Avett… Continue

Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble

My mid-September trip on the East Coast included a Saturday night in Woodstock, New York at Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble, a long-awaited and highly anticipated treat for this long-time fan of The Band, and of Helm in particular. The Rambles are a series of shows that Helm hosts in the recording studio he built on his Woodstock property, and they've become legendary because of the always-stellar lineup of blues and roots musicians and a… Continue
