Fingers On...Fingers Off

I often make the point to students that paying attention to when fingers need to come off is as important as paying attention to when they need to go on the strings.



I just had a student of my classical foundation course post a video that illustrates this nicely. He usually masters every piece flawlessly.....but in the last piece by Sor, he messes up a passage toward the end. Student Pushes Through Shearer Classical Book

I have a student who, like many, was wasting time by getting too hung up on each piece in the Shearer book (which I use as a textbook for my classical course). Even after he had done a good job, he kept working at it to try to get it as fast as he heard somebody else play it



That is fine, but he was neglecting going forward, which is very important at this stage.

Reasons for false starts uncovered.......

A student was wondering why he keeps messing up the beginning of his pieces when trying to play for others. I gave him a simple exercise to perform which showed him the reason very quickly!

Air on the G string (BWV1068) by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) in tab

PA Systems

I've had a few different PA set-ups in my day. The last radical change was from the usual 2 speaker style to the Bose L1 line array speaker system with a single totem pole type stand which acts as mains and monitors all in one simple set-up. The only problem for me was the weight of the base which houses the 2 amps and mixer. It does take up less room than a conventional set-up and is quicker to set up but that one piece is too heavy for me so....Bose now has the L1Compact. A lighter version… Continue

Correction for “Africa,” as arranged by Andy McKee

We’ve discovered an unfortunate error in our transcription of Andy McKee’s fingerstyle arrangement of “Africa” in the November 2009 issue of Acoustic Guitar. The tuning key listed is slightly (but significantly!) off the mark—the tuning that we printed was D G D G B D, but should have been D G D G A D. The notes and tab numbers are correct, as is the second-fret capo. We’re deeply sorry about any confusion this may have caused.

Didn't know I had a blog....

I don't know if I will find time to use this feature or not but we'll get it started anyway. I'm 57 and live in Brampton, ON, Canada. I have been playing guitar since I was 12. Guitar was not my first (or my last) instrument I learned to play. I started palying trumpet when I was 8. I now play trumpet, trombone, tenor sax, French Horn, guitar, bass, 5 string banjo, mandolin, uke, pedal steel, recorder, harmonicas, dulcimer, canjo...I think that's it. A Special Froggy Bottom Guitar
