CAT'S WAIL

  Hello Guitar Friends-

I recorded and downloaded this to YouTube a few months ago.  I'd like to get a little more creative on the video, and possibly re-record the tune on a multi-track, but other than that, considering it was recorded with an iPhone (precariously sitting atop my acoustic guitar while I played), it seems to have come…

Guide-Tone Lines

Learning how to improvise is an ambition of many guitarists and while it may seem at the outset a very difficult thing to achieve there are approaches to the subject that will help you get started. One of these is guide-tone lines.

In the attached guitar video I’m creating guide-tone lines for fingerstyle guitar over standard chord progression movements which I then go onto embellish. A guide-tone line is a melodic line which comprises of tones from the chords of the chord progression…

Guitar at Work - Week 2 - Picking Hand Arpeggio Exercise

Having trouble learning to play arpeggios with your picking hand? This week I'm going to show you an exercise I came up with when I first started playing fingerstyle. At the time, I found it hard to play arpeggios in a p-i-m-a pattern. My fingers just weren't coordinated enough so they all just wanted to pluck all of the strings at the same time. That's why I came up with this exercise to help train my fingers to do what I wanted them to do. This is something you can do on just about any…

Winfield

Well I went to Winfield and had a blast. Of all the practice and hard work, I did not get placed in the top 5. There were some tough competitors this year and I had a great time meeting people and hanging out.

Now if anyone ever goes, they must camp, it is the best way to experience Winfield. I've never seen a mosh pit for a bluegrass jam, but there certainly was one, minus the moshing. But a big crowd in front of a small stage for sure.

Well I'm off to practice for the… Continue
