The Vintage Guitar News and Views January Edition.
As with my peers concerning the state of todays guitar and vintage guitar market I will add in my own opinion for what it is worth.(no pun intended ). What I see is a halt to the sudden and rapid rise in prices that mint vintage guitars will bring in, such as those we have seen in the last 3 to 4 years and a slow down or market correction, which we are seeing today, not that these guitars are worth any less but rather a more informed marke… Continue

2009 has been an interesting year. As a sole proprietor trying to survive in the current economic environment, times have become very challenging. Two years ago, things were very good. But, the local economy in south-western Montana has felt the impact of what's going on across our nation and in our world. Businesses that have been alive for over a decade have closed their doors, as have many newer businesses. This causes my business to suffer, as I have lost so many customers. I am not sure if… Continue

Here is a recent post from the forum at www.guitarprinciples.com, giving advice to a new student suffering playing pains...
Janet,
The "Principles will absolutely help you if you use it. I had a similar situation in that when I started using the principles I had terrible back pain... that I didn't even know about! Once I started using the principles it became obvious, but it took time to get under control. Same thing with the wrist pain.
I'm curre… Continue
In Guitar Craft I have learned how changing one small part changes everything. This is subtle, something I have experienced in my guitar practice many times before, and I continue to be amazed when I experience this again. Tonight I decided to focus on one section of Dandelion Wish that I play poorly. Has to do with moving from playing lots of arpeggios into playing an artificial harmonic, getting my right hand back to more arpeggios… Continue

At www.guitarprinciples.com we regularly fix up guitar player's technique using methods that are based on the laws of how the body learns. "The Principles System" of learning guitar is scientific, so it works for everyone who uses it, enabling them to get rid of any playing problems they have, or avoid getting them in the first place!
I was very happy to get this typical note from someone who just discovered GuitarPrinciples, she is a Berklee grad..… Continue
It's Not a Problem, It's a Process!
When you have a problem in playing, you SHOULD get excited and interested. You SHOULD say "oh goodie, another opportunity to explore, experiment, study, and form new conclusions that will result in me being a better player". I know, I know, the only result you get when you have a problem is that big hole in your bedroom wall where you threw your favorite axe!
But, it is possible to achieve the great state of maturity enjoyed by myself and other seasoned play… Continue
Many players have handicapped fingers that struggle to play. It begins in the beginning. My "Foundation Ex" give full, basic functionality to all students.
Here is an interesting video of a student working on these exercises, and making a common error with his 3rd finger. It is reacting with tension each time 4 is used. If not corrected, this would be a big, and "forever" problem............

I often make the point to students that paying attention to when fingers need to come off is as important as paying attention to when they need to go on the strings.
I just had a student of my classical foundation course post a video that illustrates this nicely. He usually masters every piece flawlessly.....but in the last piece by Sor, he messes up a passage toward the end. He doesn't know it (yet), but it is because particulars fingers are not coming off at the right time.
Check it out.....… Continue
I have a student who, like many, was wasting time by getting too hung up on each piece in the Shearer book (which I use as a textbook for my classical course). Even after he had done a good job, he kept working at it to try to get it as fast as he heard somebody else play it
That is fine, but he was neglecting going forward, which is very important at this stage.
So I have been pushing him. He sent me a video of his results after 2 weeks with 2 new pieces. They are quite good. Here they are ar… Continue

Air on the G-string is Bach's ever popular song. I love this song and I find it both challenging and a joy to play. This song is so beautiful and expressive, you would have to be a rock not to be moved by it's melody. Recently, I have had a song request in my blog to cover this song so that gave me the push to revisit Air on the G string. Of all the bach songs I have done, this is the song that I have the greatest di… Continue
