Comment by Jim Swalley on August 21, 2012 at 10:10pm My guitar teacher told me a long time ago when I started with an acoustic to go easy at first. It's easy to be too enthusiastic and overdo it, causing intense pain the next day or three. Discouragement follows. Try shorter sessions at first, skip a day if needed, and you'll soon be able to practice longer without painful consequences.
I followed this old advice last year when I got re-inspired to play again after a long dry spell. It took about 10 days to rebuild calluses with very little pain involved. It helped me to switch off with my electric for a day or two whenever I overdid it so I didn't have to take a long break.
